Tips For Moving Large Furniture Yourself

No matter where you are moving household items to, whether it's to self storage in london or your new home, it is always guaranteed that you'll have to move furniture, and lots of it. From smaller items like chairs and stools, sets of drawers and dressers, to large bulky pieces like sofas, beds and dining tables. No matter what the type of furniture you're moving, one thing's for sure - you'll need to put in lots of hard work and patience. Carrying heavy furniture is particularly difficult and requires some level of skill.

No matter how organised you are, or how many people you have to help, there will always be that one large piece of furniture that simply doesn't want to be moved. A glass cabinet that's incredibly fragile, a divan bed that doesn't fit through the door frame - there's always something that's awkward to move. And often, moving the furniture has to be done carefully to not only protect the furniture from damage, but the house it's being moved in as well - it's so easy to scuff a wall or rip a carpet in the midst of a large furniture move.

If you're going to be moving heavy furniture items to either a new house or a cheap self storage unit, and feel that you're simply unable to move the items yourself, it could be worth hiring some professional help. Perhaps you don't have access to a vehicle large enough to accommodate the items, or you don't have enough friends or family available to help. Whatever your reasons for needing help, if it's the best option for you then make sure you do your research and select a company that offers you good insurance and expert customer service.

If you do decide to DIY your move and opt to tackle the big furniture yourself, you're going to want to follow these tips:

Prepare The Furniture

Any furniture that needs dismantling will need to be dismantled before moving day. For tricky or fragile pieces, this can take a lot of time so make sure you allow yourself enough time to do it properly. Make sure all separate pieces are packaged properly and labelled.

Prepare The Home

You should consider preparing your home by removing doors (where possible) and wrapping padding around areas likely to get knocked or scraped. Remove all items that might get in your way as well to ensure a clear path for the large furniture to move along.

Don't Try To Save Money On Packaging

Often people package large furniture badly which results in it being broken or damaged when it gets to its final destination at the self storage bedford facility or new home. Although there are lots of areas of moving home where you can save money, large furniture packaging is not one of them. These items of furniture will be some of the most expensive items in your home - it is worth investing a few extra pounds in protecting them properly.

Be Aware Of The Flooring

Flooring can often become damaged during large furniture moves. Carpets can easily become ripped and tiles and hardwood flooring can become scratched. In places you cannot lift furniture, avoid dragging it and instead use trolleys or floor protection like cardboard.
