Reducing Mobile Costs with Data Plan Use

Mobile telephony has become all the rage with a market that is continually providing access to a better range of products. Mobile phones have evolved from clunky featureless devices only capable of calls and texting into sleek devices with live video streaming capability. This trend has increased the need for more robust network capabilities that can handle data requests. The market has responded in true supply and demand fashion. So where is the problem in this fairy tale? The costs of mobile data consumptions can be quite high. Most users will decry the current trend where they spend more on data than any other phone function.

Network carriers provide relatively inflexible mobile packages composed of voice, SMS, and data. This monthly data bundle determines how much the user is allowed to consume. The problem is that as devices are becoming smarter and more interconnected, data plan usage is sky rocketing. The increase in the number of applications for such devices has been a second factor increasing usage. Most of these apps consume data for their primary function as the majority will require connectivity to function. Those that do not use data directly may still require a connection for background data streaming. These streams may be necessary or even just peripheral to the app’s function. Such details are usually highlighted in the user license, but the truth is hardly anyone ever reads end user license agreements. Nevertheless, who can blame them with the average user downloading almost two or three apps a week?

This increased data plan usage is becoming a nightmare for the mobile user. The current system of networks used by carriers has limited load bearing capacity. This means that the carrier has to find ways of discouraging excess usage while they invest in networks with larger capacities. This has resulted in the overage charge. The overage charge is a punitive charge imposed on mobile data users who exceed their monthly allocated bundle. A second side effect of the excess consumption is slowed response from the network. This is because in cases of excess usage, the connection the network provides is automatically downgraded.

So what is the average mobile user supposed to do? The only solution is to monitor their data use. They can download my data manager for this function. My data manager is an app that once installed monitors the uploads and downloads of data and informs the user of the same. It can be useful in controlling excess use.
