On the trail of Asian Elephant in Corbett

First national park in India, Corbett is a preferred attraction among the nature lovers and wildlife aficionados. It was developed in 1936 and named after Jim Corbett, famous British hunter, conservationist and author. The park is an abode to more than 585 species of birds, 33 species of reptiles, 37 species of dragonflies, 7 species of fishes and amphibians. The national park is spread in a vast area of 520.8 sq. km and renowned for its rich wildlife and picturesque beauty. It is perched amidst the snow-clad Himalayas, beautiful rivers, streams and ridges crisscrossing the topography, provide a soothing experience to the eyes.
The matrix of varied geological features of Corbett has given rise to an equally diverse set of life forms (flora and fauna) that are found in the park. The enchanting landscape of the park really magnetizes the visitors and provide long-lasting unforgettable memories.
Elephants at Corbett:
The elephant, largest of the living mammals, has been a vital part of the history, mythology, tradition, culture and religion of India.
It is certainly an exhilarating experience seeing the herd of elephants in the park. Corbett is considered as one of the best spots to watch this majestic animal so close. The park takes good care and provides daily diet to the elephants. They give sufficient food to the elephants so that these rare animals can be kept in good health for a longer period of time. The daily diet of an elephant is perked up with the berries and fruits that are available in abundance.
A drive through the park is worth it, if you get to see these wild giants. Elephant Safari, one of the prime attractions of Jim Corbett, is also arranged in the park.
In the summer season, one can get the view of the elephants walking in herds. Corbett has more than 600 Asian elephants wandering around together in plains or along the Ramganga river. This provides an exclusive opportunity to sense the exquisiteness of flora and fauna in Corbett National park.
In the past, there were very much less elephants in Corbett, but the population of this big and beautiful creature has increased considerably in the recent decades. In Corbett, the places where the elephants can be easily sited are:
- Dhikala Chaur
- Phulai Char
- Saddle Dam
- Malani Chaur Area
Things to keep in mind:
There are two prominent things that a tourist must keep in his mind while watching the elephants in Corbett:
- One should maintain a good distance with this giant creature. It is important to follow the essential safety measures to watch this animal without any hassles.
- One should not try to disturb or provoke them.
Though people might have seen this royal animal in their day to day lives, but watching hundreds of elephants together is no doubt a riveting experience.
