Will Heikkinen Working in the Community

Will Heikkinen, by the time he was a senior in high school, had become familiar with many different communities in New England and across the ocean in Spain. Born in Portland, Maine, he first attended elementary school in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where his family moved a few years after having him. After finishing elementary school at South Elementary in Cape Elizabeth, Heikkinen moved with his family Andover, Massachusetts, where he attended middle school and high school. By the time he got his first job in Andover, Heikkinen had lived in three different cities in Maine and Massachusetts before he was old enough to drink, and his adventures were just beginning.

Will Heikkinen saw that participating in his community was an important part of giving back and creating opportunities for himself. Heikkinen attended Andover High School and became involved in sports, the school paper, and even in local charities in nearby Lawrence, Massachusetts. Heikkinen was a two-time, all-state receiver for Andover High School’s football team. He also ran track and participated on the basketball team as well. He took Spanish in high school and excelled at it, so he found an opportunity to work with Spanish-speaking elementary school students in Lawrence who needed help learning English. He tutored children to help them succeed in school and beyond.

Will Heikkinen also organized a series of seven-on-seven football tournaments in his community for Scouts, Inc., a national scouting and talent evaluation organization. For two summers, he ensured that high school players from Massachusetts, Maine and the surrounding area had an opportunity to participate in these tournaments. He also found time to volunteer for such community organizations as Lazarus House Ministries.

When it was time to go to college, Will Heikkinen decided to spend a semester studying at Nebrija University in Spain. He was able to go in part because he chose to work also for Canterbury English, an organization that places native English speakers in Spain to teach students English. Heikkinen learned more about Spanish culture while he was there, adding to his fluency and understanding of the Spanish language in the process.

Will Heikkinen started his first semester at the College of Will and Mary, the second-oldest university in the United States, in September of 2015. He hopes to major in Government and get a minor in Hispanic Studies eventually as his collegiate career takes off. Heikkinen’s well-rounded education and experience abroad as well as his commitment to his community make for a bright future.
