The Rug as an Accent of Colour in Your Home

The role of colours in interior design is like a science. A designer or a psychologist, or even an artist may not understand it completely. However, it is a fact that colours have their effect on our moods and can transform completely the look and the feel of a room or even a whole property.

Rugs are only one of many ways to add a splash of colour in your home.

The advice of the specialists and experts is to use neutral colours for a base. This will not only keep your senses at ease and provide a calm & peaceful atmosphere for rest, but will give you the opportunity to use different colours when you feel the need to change the interior a little bit.

White, gray and light pastel tones are perfect for a base. If you think that white is too pale, you can use a colour to match the dark or bright wood of the furniture or to contrast with painted plastic or metal objects and details in the interior. Very strong, bright, intense and electrical colours are not very proper for walls, especially if we are talking about a whole room. It will be really difficult to spend several hours there without getting a headache.

Once you've chosen the base you can free the artist in you and start playing with colours. It is not obligatory to have only one colour for the accents. You can create your own palette with several shades of a single colour or with completely different (but fitting one with another) colours. There are many online and offline tools you can use like Color-hex.com. Here you can find examples or create your own palette and experiment with different combinations. You can also stick with one palette for the whole property or create different one for every room. The choice is yours and depends only on your personal taste.

The next step is to decide which objects or details will be the accents with colour in your rooms. Here comes the rug as a good solution. Why? Because it is a good size, can be changed and replaced without big efforts, and can be found easily in many colour and pattern variations. And these are only part of the pros. For example, you can easily move the rug from one room to another if you want to shuffle the colours. You can find matching decoration and form several areas with colour accents. It's also not so difficult to change a rug with a new one, unlike the upholstery for instance.

The only thing you have to keep in mind if you choose the rugs for your colourful accents is cleaning. It is deep cleaning what I mean and it is not a rocket science or something very very hard. Simply when dealing with coloured fibres know that colours can be damaged or changed if using steam or hot water extraction for cleaning. In the cases with patterns or bright colours, dry carpet cleaning is the most suitable method. Anyway, if you cannot decide or do the job by yourself, you can always seek advice or help from experienced carpet cleaners to prevent any unfortunate situations.
