The word "Nap" is defined as a brief duration of sleep, primarily during the day. People have been napping since ages, there’s nothing fascinating about it. Perhaps Newton was napping under the apple tree when he got the idea to delve into the concept of gravity. The human tendency to just sit back and relax for a while after a meal or catch a few winks, so to speak, during the day has evolved in a unique way. Scarcity of leisure and increasingly stressful lifestyles have helped us adapt from napping to power napping. We’ve all heard of it, we think we know it very well (After all, we do it a lot) but do we really understand the science behind power napping? Do we truly know how to leverage those brief minutes of sweet sleep to get charged up for the rest of the day? We’ve done some fact finding for you.

Quick revitalization is the USP of power napping. Although it greatly helps a person who has not slept well during the night, it does wonders even for those who have counted quite a few sheep during the night. Studies have shown that power naps of fewer than 30 minutes, even those as brief as 6 to 10 minutes helps restore wakefulness and enhances performance and learning. However, napping for more than 30 minutes and then waking up may cause sleep inertia which is a nerd’s term for feeling groggy and disoriented after an erratic sleep. Experts have therefore set the optimum power nap duration as anywhere between 10 to 25 minutes. But Pro Nappers (A term I’ve just come up with for regular and religious power nappers) believe that the duration can be at the discretion of the sleeper, meaning, you choose the duration that suits you, that works for you.

We all thought coffee would be the fuel that pulls our eyelids up and makes us meet those deadlines.Studies never cease to amaze though. According to a study, a power nap preceded by a caffeinated drink may actually help overcome drowsiness and lethargy. This is called as a "stimulant nap" or "napuccino" as the nerds with a sense of humour call it. Speaking of stimulants, power naps work best when the right stimulants are in place. Its not just the coffee which might add power to your nap but the right environment as well. Most companies are nowadays coming up with "nap rooms" where their employees could recharge for a while and wake up happier, enthusiastic and more productive. These rooms have the right temperature, recliners, specially designed chairs and even soothing melody playing, like the hum of rain to help people in there make the most out of their power naps.

Whether or not your company decides to build you all a nap room, make sure you try power napping and experience the results yourself. Finish lunch quicker and avoid wandering on social media, instead stretch back, close your eyes and doze off to power up.
