Smart phones have become a global phenomenon of late. A typical smart phone unit is akin to a mobile phone which is layered on top of an operating system which is mobile by itself. In comparison to traditional feature phones, smart phones have more computing power and connectivity profiles like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC etc.

The 1st generation smart phones were a hybrid cross between P.D.A.’s (personal digital assistants) and mobile phones. As the technology evolved, future versions added in new features like media players, digital cameras and video cameras along with GPS navigation functionalities.

Next generation smart phones available in the market today have all the above basic tool sets and combine them with touch screen capacitive displays and the ability to browse the internet or World Wide Web. Any desktop website which is mobile optimized can now be viewed on a smart phone. Added to this is advanced connectivity spectrums like high speed 4G LTE broadband and Wi-Fi functionalities.

In terms of a mobile operating system used by next generation smart phones, there are a few options from the current market leaders including Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone.

Xiaomi Inc. is a Chinese multinational with deep expertise in the consumer electronics and computer hardware verticals. With it’s global headquarters in Beijing (China), Xiaomi Inc. has taken the smart phone world by storm. This privately held firm is currently the 5th largest manufacturer for smart phones and with sales of 70.8 million units for the calendar year 2015, grabbed an astounding 5% stake of the global smart phone market "pie".

The latest offering from the Xiaomi stable is the Xiaomi MI6 which is expected to be released sometime during quarter 3, 2016.
