Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardised test being administered since 1988 to facilitate Business Schools (B-Schools) to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied programmes. Govt. of India, Ministry of HRD approved MAT as a national level test in 2003. Just like CAT, it has a complex syllabus which more or less always remains the same. Once you understand the syllabus, you can plan your preparation strategy accordingly. Given below is the analysis of Mat 2016 syllabus:Quantitative Section: This section is usually the most difficult of all and requires the most practice. It tests your conceptual clarity of core mathematical concepts through tricky questions. It mostly includes topics like Geometry (Lines, angles, Triangles, Spheres, Rectangles, Cube, and Cone etc.), Ratios and Proportion, Percentages, In- equations Quadratic and linear equations, Algebra, Profit & Loss, Averages, Partnership (Accounts), Time-Speed- Distance, Work and time, Number system, HCF & LCM, Geometric Progression, Arithmetic progression, Arithmetic mean, Geometric mean and Harmonic mean etc.Logical reasoning and Data Interpretation Section: This section is also quite tough and requires quick thinking to provide rational solutions. It usually not as calculation intensive as the quantitative section. There are no particular formulae to solve these questions, just logical arguments. It requires quick and accurate analysis of the data provided. It comprises of topics such as Graphs, Line charts, Pie Chart, Venn diagram, Critical reasoning, Visual reasoning, Assumption-Premise- Conclusion, Statements and assumptions, Statements and conclusions, Definitely true definitely false kind of statement, Linear arrangements, Family tree, Symbol Based problems, Coding and decoding and Sequencing etc.Verbal Ability Section: This section is built on basic concepts of English language but is of much difficult level than a normal test. It tests your ability to comprehend passages and answer questions based on them and also tests your vocabulary. It consists of topics like Verbal Reasoning, Syllogisms, Contextual usage, Analogies, Antonyms, Fill In the Blanks, Jumbled paragraphs, Sentence Correction, Foreign language words used in English, Sentence completion, Sentence correction, Odd man out, Idioms, One word substitution and Different usage of same word etc.General Awareness Section: This section tests your general knowledge and how much you stay updated on what is going on the world. It contains questions from topics like Current Affairs, Business, Punch line of companies, Top officials of big companies, Advertisements, Major corporate events, Famous award and prizes, World Records, Books and authors, Science, History, Geography, International organizations, Important quotations, Social issues, Sports, Finance, Automobiles, Entertainment and Politics etc.This was a section-wise analysis of the syllabus of MAT 2016. This will help you understand what all you need to cover before the examination in order to be fully prepared for it.
