When it comes to the full suite of treatments, procedures and services provided by your Sun City dentist, nothing strikes terror in the hearts of the phobic quite like the prospect of a tooth extraction, root canal therapy or dental implant surgery. These three particular treatments have the worst reputation for being the most traumatic and painful of all the services offered by dental healthcare practitioners. But are they perhaps not just a little misunderstood? According to dental implant specialists in Arizona, they absolutely are! So, in this four-part article series, we shall be explaining what each of these procedures are, why they are sometimes necessary and why it is patients really need not be scared of them!

Let’s start with tooth extractions

Dispelling the Myths Surrounding Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions are the popular subject of many horror stories and crime thrillers usually involving the mafia. It’s no surprise then that the idea of having a tooth pulled makes us want to run for the door screaming. But the reality is, dental extractions are incredibly quick, easy and painless! "In most cases, a tooth can be pulled in a matter of seconds," says an experienced Sun City dentist. "If necessary, we will numb the gum surrounding the tooth so that patients won’t feel a thing."

Okay, but why are tooth extractions necessary?

"There are many different diagnoses that might warrant a tooth to be extracted and most of them you will be familiar with," says the Sun City dentist. "First of all, when a child’s milk teeth begin to fall out, it’s not uncommon for a loose tooth to become slightly decayed. This is caused by bacteria and food debris, which can become trapped in the underside of the loose crown. The soft tissue in the pulp chamber of the loose tooth can also begin to decay, which causes bad breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. If the tooth begins to decay and it won’t come out, bring your child in and we’ll whip the tooth out in a matter of seconds."

Doesn’t it hurt?

"There is a brief moment of pain as the tooth pulls free, but it goes away almost immediately and it’s absolutely nothing a little treat afterwards won’t take care of! There can be a little bleeding, but we will press some moist gauze onto the tooth socket and it should ebb within minutes. Children are resilient creatures and little hurts are soon forgotten at the prospect of a new toy. In any case, loose teeth can be very uncomfortable, especially while eating, so it is often a relief to have them removed."

"The second reason a tooth extraction may become necessary is for impacted or misaligned wisdom teeth," says the Sun City dentist. "The nature of the procedure required to remove the offending teeth depends on whether they have fully erupted from the jawbone and gum, or are still encased within it. Wisdom teeth can either be extracted via a simple in-office procedure or via surgery. Either way, patients will be completely anesthetized (numbed) and won’t typically feel anything as the teeth are removed."

Stay Tuned for Part 2

There are additional reasons a tooth extraction can be required, so stay tuned for the second installment of this four-part article series to find out what they are! We then speak to a dental implant specialist in Arizona about the next frightening dental procedure: root canals!
