Enjoying the Sights of Puglia

Also known as Apulia, this heel of the "boot" of Italy is located at the south-eastern tip of the country. Bordered by picturesque seas and rich in Baroque architecture, you will also find cities full of history, deep mysterious caves and a landscape that dates back to the ancient Greek and Neolithic times. Caves
The Grotte di Castellana, a mystifying network of caves, was discovered in 1930. The have been carved over the centuries by an underground stream that stretches for several kilometres. Of the two tours offered to view the stalagmites and stalactites, the longer is the one to go for; this will take you deep into the White Cave, where you can see the glittering alabaster rock formations.
The cuisine
The top hotels in Puglia are famous for the region's delicious cuisine. Take some time and venture out to sample the best food of the region, however. Pugliese cuisine is poor cuisine – known as Cucina Povera - consisting of fish, vegetables and offal, but it is truly delicious. You can also get more than 100 varieties of bread here and the region’s Burrata cheese is world famous. The area has also been a wine producer since Greek times, and some labels are very highly regarded.
A castle
One of the region's most famous yet mysterious buildings is the Castel del Monte. Located on a hill, you will enjoy panoramic views on a visit to this important historical site. The castle was constructed in the 13th century and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is one of the continent’s best examples of medieval military architecture, with a polygon structure topped with eight octagonal towers. The mystery that surrounds this building is regarding the fact that no one actually knows why King Frederick II of Swabia ordered the construction of Castel del Monte!

For those who enjoy history, another important archaeological site is Museo Nazionale de Egnazia, located on the coast.
