GPS Navigators – What Are GPS Navigation Systems?

Have you ever experienced driving to a particular place and losing your way? You no longer have to stop to ask for directions or flip open a map. You can always rely on GPS navigators, which are state-of-the-art navigation systems made up of audio and video components and a GPS receiver. GPS stands for ‘global positioning system’, a satellite-based navigator that relies on at least 24 satellites. It can work almost anywhere in the world, regardless of the weather condition, 24-hours a day, without subscription and setup fees. GPS systems used to be meant for military use, particularly by the US Department of Defense, but they eventually became available for civilians in the 1980s.

GPS satellites orbit the earth in a precise path twice a day. Every satellite transmits a one-of-a-kind signal with orbital parameters to enable GPS navigators and devices to decode and compute its precise location. The receiver relies on that trilateration and information to determine the satellite’s exact location, and it measures the distance to every satellite by referring to the amount of time it will take to receive the transmitted signal. Distance measurements from satellites will enable the receiver to determine your position and show it on a screen. GPS navigation systems are helpful in measuring your running or walking routes, wayfinding, mapping a path or a route, or guiding you through your adventure into the unknown.

To track movement and calculate your latitude and longitude (2-D position), the receiver of the GPS navigator must be locked on to a signal of at least three satellites. Four or more satellites will enable the receiver find your 3-D position, which includes the altitude. The GPS will typically track eight or more satellites, but that will depend on your location and the time. Car GPS navigators can calculate other data, including your trip distance, speed, distance to your destination, sunset, and sunrise.

High-quality car GPS navigators are extremely accurate due to a parallel multi-channel design. High-end receivers are able to lock onto satellites as soon as they are switched on, and they are able to maintain the tracking lock, even if you pass through dense forests, mountains, or navigating through an urban setting with a lot of tall buildings. However, keep in mind that some atmospheric factors and other sources for errors can affect the accuracy of the GPS receiver. Some manufacturers of GPS navigation systems include special features like WAAS (wide area augmentation system) to enhance accuracy.
