This is more important than ever in an age of global competition via the internet and a tentative economy. Returning customers require far fewer costs from a company that advertising aimed at gaining new ones.

Cutting corners may be tempting when looking for a plump bottom line, but it will show in the service a customer receives. Make sure that your business is fully staffed and that the employees are sufficiently trained. Granted, the end product or service will likely require a slightly higher price tag than that of a business not as focused on customer satisfaction, but most people realize you get what you pay for. If they are installed with confidence by a competent and well-informed buying experience, they will bring their business back.

It is also vitally important that you maintain good communication with your clients. They aren't necessarily your friends; therefore, funny, jocular emails aren't exactly appropriate. Communication refers to staying in touch by asking how things are going for them and to remind them that whenever they are ready to buy a product you offer, you are there for them. It is a good idea to keep a list of around 15-30 customers with whom you have kept a good business relationship and touch base with them every couple of months or so. This isn't meant to downplay the importance of other customers; loyal, understanding customers, however, are part of the building blocks of your business.

Rewards programs for current customers are effective retention strategies as well. A large number of companies such as edenred offer promotions geared toward enticing new customers into the fold, but often forget about those that are already there. Remember, every business's current customer is another's potential new customer. If there are no incentives for a client or customer to stay, they may jump ship from your business to someone else. Remind the customer of their importance.Any profitable business relies a great deal on repeat customers. Remind these people that they are important.
