Isabella Stewart Gardner was an avid art collector and the dream of her and her husband was to open a Museum where people of all means would be able to enjoy some of the world’s best artwork. That dream was realized in 1903 when the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was opened to much fanfare.

Visitors to this Boston Attraction will see more than 2,500 paintings and other objects representing ancient Rome, Asia, medieval Europe, Italy and more. Works by Titian, Rembrandt, Whistler, Degas and Botticelli are examples of the master works on display.

In the Dutch Room, visitors will also see some empty frames. These frames serve as a memorial to the paintings that were stolen from the Museum in March of 1990. The stolen works, estimated at $500 million, included The Concert by Vermeer, which was the first major piece purchased by Gardner. While the case has not been solved, and none of the stolen works recovered, Museum officials still save a place for the missing pieces in the hopes that one day the stolen paintings will be found.
