Festivals and Carnivals in Puglia

A considerable number of travellers have experienced the delights of Italy's Puglia region over the last few years. Many people come to sample the great variety of traditional Italian foods, while others have been inspired by stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding rural landscape. Il Carnivale di Putignano

The major celebratory days of the Putignano carnival occur between the 23rd of February and the 9th of March. Great crowds gather in the historic town centre and honour the symbolic significance of St Stefano. There are a series of colourful processions staged by members of the local community. Visitors also have the opportunity to witness the antics of the character-filled mascot. The festivities draw to a close on Shrove Tuesday, when a group of fake nuns dash through the streets for the entertainment of the local people.

Many of the people living in the area (as with much of Italy) are deeply religious. Locals attend regular services at the Cathedrals of Troia and Canosa di Puglia. If you're staying in one of the nearby Puglia hotels you may have the opportunity to watch the spiritual procession of the crucifix during the month of February. The Christians who partake in this procession walk barefoot through the historic area of Noicattaro. They wear thorned crowns and carry great crosses to symbolise their religious devotion.

La Festa di San Nicola

People travel from distant parts of Italy to pay their respects to the Patron saint of Bari during this three-day festival in May. They line the streets and pay homage to this saintly figure. A statue of Saint Nicholas is transported onto a boat then carried across the bay of Bari during the evening. Large groups of people gather on the shore to give thanks and enjoy a spectacular fireworks show.

Festival della Valle D'Itria

Those interested in the musical culture of Italy are encouraged to choose mid July to early August to come to Puglia. Hotels do book out at these times, so be sure to reserve accommodation early. If you do, you will have the chance to attend this festival and hear a variety of musical experts playing the famous compositions of Wagner and Verdi. The musical entertainment will continue at popular local venues such as the Piccinni Conservatory and the Kismet theatre.

Sampling the impressive range of wine is top of most peoples' list when visiting Puglia. Hotels often have an excellent selection in their restaurants, however those with a real passion for Italian wine may time their holidays to coincide with Bari's wine festival. The local sommeliers serve a splendid variety of reds and whites during this popular event.
