Biplab Biswas: Merging Tradition with Modernity
Posted: Oct 15, 2018
They say beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, and that seems to be quite true for Biplab Biswas whose paintings pave the way for us to see what beauty really is. Biplab Biswas paintings are exquisite examples of how one can merge tradition with modernity on the canvas to give birth to something new which will make you both think and appreciate at the same time. Born in India, hailing from West Bengal which is often considered the cultural capital of India, Biswas’ paintings are rooted in the tradition and culture of India and all of them have a message which is linked to femininity.
The abundance of the colour blue in most of Biplab Biswas paintings is symptomatic of the figure which he often chooses as his subject, Krishna. Women also play a major role in his paintings where many women are brought to the reality via art through his eccentric mixture of colours and symmetric forms of lines. Most of Biplab Biswas’ works are oil on canvas which bring out the lifelikeness of his art form. Women in his paintings are not bystanders but rather the subject where their desires, actions and reactions are beautifully captured without the need of a mask.
In one of his most famous paintings, "In the Moonlight", he beautifully sums up the relationship of the traditional story of Krishna and Radha, where Krishna is seen playing his flute while Radha seems to be listening to it but shying away from him at the same time. Bringing to the canvas, "ras-leela" of Krishna which is part of Indian culture, tradition and religion, Biswas tries to mix the antique with modern.
Another famous painting where Krishna’s face becomes the subject along with the faces of 4 other women depicts the reality of Raas Leela without depicting it directly. Krishna, thus, becomes an important figure in his paintings. While some might call it religious, it is not exactly so, because more than the religious affinity to Krishna, the paintings are a play on the reality and myth where Krishna is just a metaphorical reality.
Biplab Biswas has been working in the industry for a quite a while now, and with his unique style he has made a place for himself in the art industry. But Biswas’ play with colour, forms, time and culture makes him stand apart from everyone else and hence, the genre he deals with can be determined to be a standalone one where not many artists have ventured into.
