1. Drive to the Mitchell Falls, Australia

During the dry season, one of the way to access the Mitchell Plateau is to travel there via 4wd. Mitchell Falls may be your destination but the Plateau and places such as the Gibb River Road has a lot to see and do. For many travelers who are camping and caravanning around Australia, heading off road and up to the Mitchell Plateau to ultimately visit the falls should be high on the list.

2. Mitchell Plateau Waterfalls

From the Mitchell Plateau Campground, it is a moderate 4.5km walk to the main Mitchell Falls attraction. Though, this walk is an exciting one with many small river crossings and waterfall sightings along the way. The two significant waterfalls that will be passed during the walk are Little Mertens and Big Mertens Falls. Initially, you pass over the top of Little Mertens Falls, but then shortly after having the opportunity to go below and behind the waterfall where a cave like structure has occurred for you to look out from behind the wall of water. Next, is Big Mertens which is falling about 80m into a deep gorge, this waterfall provides great photography opportunities.

3. Aboriginal Rock art

Mitchell Falls has a rich history of Indigenous Australians who used to live in the area. During the walk to the falls, there are opportunities to view aboriginal rock art. Some rock art at these certain locations has been there a lot longer than others and you can see the different ages of people who have painted it by the height it is on the rock.

4. Experience the Falls

Once at the mitchell falls you can get a great view and photo opportunity of the amazing 3 tiers at the perfect look out spot. Also, a little further up the Mitchell River, there is a perfect spot to rest after the walk and have a refreshing swim. From this point, you can get a pre-organised transfer helicopter back to the Mitchell Plateau campsite or walk the same trail back to the campsite.

5. Mitchell Falls Flights

Flights over Mitchell Falls by helicopter are an amazing experience which allows you to capture the sheer size of the falls and the awesome deep gorges that the Mitchell River continues down. The helicopter will zig zag back past the falls multiple times so you can get the best view from both sides. From up in air, you can see the Big Mertens Falls and the route that you walk to get to Mitchell Falls. There is also an option to fly straight to the falls via helicopter if you do not fancy doing the walk.
