What to Look for in a Long Distance Moving Company?

1. FMCSA registration

For a long distance interstate move, you cannot hire any moving company. Before signing up with anyone, make sure that they hold a valid license issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Any claims taking place during an interstate move are resolved by this agency and not the state authorities.

Another important legal requirement for a long distance moving company is a valid USDOT number so ask about that too.

2. Reasonable deposit

If a moving company asks you to make a big deposit ahead of the relocation, that that is a red flag for sure. Reputable movers do not do this as they understand client’s concerns. Some deposit is ok but if it constitutes a large part of the overall sum, you might want to reconsider.

3. Insurance

Safeguarding yourself against any force majeure events is not only a smart thing to do, it is a mandatory thing to do. Long distance moves demand a lot of your time, money and dedication so hiring an uninsured company is not an option. Also, make sure to find out which kind of loss the company can reimburse as this is often different from what you might assume.

4. In-person meeting at your home

Phone and email chats are ok but if a moving company claims to be delivering a great customer service, the staffers must check in at your home and measure everything. Furniture and bulky items as well as routes for carrying them out of the house or apartment are amongst the first things to discuss.

5. Moving inventory

Professional movers do not leave things to chance and keep track of inventory. Ask for a copy of moving inventory to study on your own and keep them accountable. The moving inventory should list all items you are going to move to the new place.

6. Liability

At a minimum, your moving company should provide Full Value Protection for your possessions which is the industry’s standard. You can still opt in for cheaper options but remember that they are very limited and should something happen, you might not be reimbursed.

7. Contact several companies

It is always good to have the freedom of choice. After all, long distance moving is expensive and stressful so you have every right to expect excellent customer service and support from your movers.
