If you have taken yoga classes, you might have developed an ideology regarding the style in which yoga is performed. The style taught to you by your Guru will be the one you know about. It may come as a surprise to you that there are many practitioners who teach yoga abroad and have invented their own style of yoga practice that have enchanted the learners. You may have mastered one style of teaching yoga, but it is good to know about all the different styles. Here we are sharing the 8 popular styles of yoga. It is a good idea to read details about these styles and incorporate elements into your routine. Who knows in a few years you are able to develop a different type of yoga and popularize it across continents!

1.Vinyasa Yoga

The nearest form of translation for the word Vinyasa from Sanskrit would be a flowing movements. Vinyasa means the coordination of breath with the body movement. This kind of yoga has rhythmic movements with breath control. This is almost like dance or aerobics movement. It can be practiced with light music, in a ventilated, dark room.

2.Ashtanga Yoga

"Ashta" meaning eight and "Anga" means a part. Physical poses are considered just one branch of the eight that comprise ancient yoga. Asthanga Yoga was brought to the US by Sri K> Pattabhi in the 20th century. In this style the movements are breath coordinated in the rhythmic pattern.

3.Iyenger Yoga

This is very much similar to the Ashtanga yoga, however, it was named after B.K.S Iyenger who popularized it in the west. Body movement are synchronized with different kinds of props like bands, blocks, bolsters, etc. Pranayama, or regulated and deep breathing is used to channelize the energies.

4.Bikrama Yoga

It was Bikram Chaudhary, who designed Bikrama Yoga in the 1970s. He brought this form to California all the way from India. Each session consists of twenty-six yoga postures and two breathing exercises. This style is quite popular with Western celebrities.

5.Jivamukti Yoga

Jeeva means life and Mukti means salvation. of being. It was created by Shanon Gannon and David Life in New York. This is a mix of Sanskrit chanting and pranayama. The founders state that this form of yoga is "the path to salvation by practicing compassion towards all living beings." This is an ideal combination of spirituality and exercise.

6.Power Yoga

Power yoga is just a more vigorous and powerful form of traditional yoga postures. It is a fast paced exercise module with a focus on core exercises and upper body workout. This is usually performed with upbeat music and fitness is the ultimate goal of this yoga style.

7.Sivananda Yoga

This yoga form was brought to the USA by Swami Vishnunanda in 1957. This is a regime that works on 5 pillars and they are:

  • Systematic Breathing
  • Relaxation
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Positive approach

It involves sun salutation, Savasana and variations in the other asana. It is performed without music.

8.Yin Yoga

Yin yoga can be understood as the muscle building form of yoga. This involves making the body comfortable in a pose without stressing the body and then holding the post for a longer period of time. The poses help to strengthen the connective tissues in the body. It is performed with props with little, or no music.
