Daily, people are bombarded with ads on products, publications, seminars, white papers, market projections, workshops and more focused on cloud computing. Cloud computing is not a technology. Instead, it is a model of provision and marketing Information Technology services meeting specific characteristics. The cloud is all about computer services and not products.

CLOUD TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM

Cloud is a distributed technology platform which leverage sophisticated technology innovations for providing highly resilient and scalable environments that could be used remotely by organizations in numerous powerful ways. To build upon successfully, integrate with or create a cloud environment even, requires understanding of the common inner mechanisms, architectural models and layers and understanding of business and economic factors which result from adopting and real-world usage of services that are cloud-based.

CLOUD TECHNOLOGY CONCEPTS

  1. DevOps. Development and operations is a process of software development as well as technology sets that offer an agile relationship between development and Information Technology operations. DevOps objective is to alter and enhance the relationship through advocating better collaboration and communication between the two organizations. It is cloud-related since it typically uses one, unified development testing and deployment environment which relies on holistic configuration management. Usually, this means some cloud-based develo9pment environments that use the Puppet and Chef tools. When properly implemented, DevOps is truly effective.
  2. Governance and management. When implemented by cloud management platforms, it is the concept of putting an abstraction layer between those using resources, whether cloud or not and tho9se managing those resources. This notion has a much bigger value compared to the cloud itself since it allows one to provide a set of services which removes the complexity of enterprise-based computer resources and private and public clouds resources as well.

3. Big Data Analytics. This concept utilizes large data amounts to determine new answers. While data analytics could typically entail cloud-based resources, like using the massive scalability of public cloud, the concept transcends cloud computing the same as value. The concept has started to explode in data as a service form.

The concepts from cloud benefit enterprise Information Technology as a whole.

This makes cloud computing very much valuable as a platform for innovation, not only for storage and computing.

The same as any tool, cloud computing isn’t perfect, nor does it apply in all settings and could not be implemented overnight. It needs evaluation of the benefits and risks, a phased implementation plan and defining the continuous improvement process for the production stage.

CLOUD COMPUTING MODELS

  1. Community Cloud shares infrastructure between various organizations from a certain communi8ty with common issues, whether internally managed or through a third-party and hosted externally or internally. The expenses are spread over lesser uses compared to a public cloud to realize the potential cost savings.
  2. Public Cloud is established where various organizations have the same needs and seek to share infrastructure. Additionally, it could be attractive economically as the resources used and shared in the community are exploited already. This model is where service providers make resources available for the public online. It lets users’ access different vital cloud resources. One of the main benefits of using public cloud is that users are emancipated from doing certain important tasks on the computing machines that they could not get away with otherwise. Obviously, public cloud is bound to provide numerous benefits for the users, which could be sensed by its ubiquitous demand.
  3. Private Cloud enables remote access to sensitive apps of enterprises by tablet device or smart phones anytime, anywhere. The cloud-based resources are delivered to a single platform that provide high security, performance and user experience. One could access the desktop, change settings, run apps and access data exactly as sitting in front of a local PC, using a mouse and keyboard.

THE ESSENCE OF CLOUD COMPUTING

Cloud is portrayed as a disruptive change in the way computing and communications are delivered to and used by end users. Same as with any change, there’s considerable room for innovation and numerous opportunities for providers and customers. Cloud computing isn’t just a new vision, not just a new product or a new service. Actually, it’s all of those and more. New sectors in the market are emerging and each needs to ‘cross the chasm’ to achieve widespread adoption. The technologies and processes these days also have to adapt or they would perish. Even Information Technology education should be modernized to reflect the changing processes and roles.

CLOUD SERVICES

There’s no single definition for a cloud service, but conceptually every service provides measured amount of one or more capabilities at certain quality levels at an agreed price. The following are three types of service defined.

  1. IaaS - Infrastructure as a Service encompasses basic computing, storage and networking capacities.
  2. PaaS – Platform as a Service offers capabilities to develop and deploy customer-owned apps.
  3. SaaS – Software as a Service, offers commonly used aps on a shared basis.

Cloud computing is technology that is becoming more and more popular among organizations worldwide. There are various cloud services on offer at present.
