The role and impact of IoT in Transportation

Internet of Things (IoT) is significantly accelerating the innovation pace in the transportation field, particularly the cars that people drive on a daily basis. When applying the laws which have been driving technology innovation for decades, it won’t be long before automobiles would resemble smart devices on wheels.

TODAY’S CONNECTED CARS

Already, cars built after 2010 include several connected systems, providing drivers with the ability to view streaming video, listen to satellite radio, display and use smart phone apps, request roadside help, navigate roadways, find open parking spaces and remotely unlock doors. Telsa models are equipped with functionality which aows cars to be wiressy upgraded. In the third part of 2013, Telsa tweaked the suspension systems of the S cars by pushing an update wirelessly, which automatic raised the car height when being driven at highway speeds. Automobile owners must learn about the need for a change, schedule for appointment, bring the cars in for service and wait for the work to finish.

Soon, automobiles would even appear similar to smart phones and PCs. Toyota’s designing a car the enables owners to change the exterior and interior appearance, the same way one does with mobile devices and computers. Now, one only has to pic the ‘car top’ background one wants to display, customize the names and then hit ‘enter’. After over 100 years, finally, trucks and cars are at the cusp of becoming real ‘auto’ mobiles by doing driverless. It would not be impossible to have autonomous vehicles commonplace by the year 2025, only ten years away. This is because they provide many benefits, such as less consumption of energy and fewer accidents.

AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

Autonomous vehicle would free the driver and passengers to socialize. Mercedes has imagined a car that’s more of a boardroom or living room on wheels. The front passenger and driver seats swivel to enable face-to-face communication. Furthermore, the car company also reimagines its cars from the inside out with a FO 15 concept car. In addition, the cars in the future would be equipped with touch screens on almost every surface. Imagine children viewing a screen of the actual universe above as they riding a car.

AUTOMOBILES AS SENSORS

Most cars have some sensing of the environment already, such as measuring the temperature outside. As sensors become more and more affordable and capable, cars would themselves become sensors that could not only enhance the experience of getting from point A to B, but helps in resolving some of the most pressing problems in the word too. Already, there are numerous application that help drivers find a parking space. However, imagine a car that can identify an empty parking space as it alerts to drivers on nearby open spaces. The new functionality furthermore helps eliminate the resources and time wasted on parking cars.

CONNECTED INFRASTRUCTURE

In addition to the vehicles, the Internet of Things would build connections between and among vehicles and the transportation business. The connectedness offer numerous benefits. As transportation become more connected via IoT to create a coordinated system that is designed to get everyone to their destination safely and on time. In case of a car crash, the sensors installed on the vehicle would alert nearby vehicles about the problem, allowing them to sow down or take a different route.

THE ERA OF THE DRONES

UAVs or drones are unmanned aerial vehicles. The remotely controlled vehicles are getting more commonplace. Poised to challenge the definition of transportation, drones significantly boost organization supply chains and logistics operations through delivering smaller items within the transportation system’s ast mile. Moreover, drones would transform the way goods are delivered across. In the near future, drones would be able to carry big loads while hovering only a few feet above ground. These drones could be monitored and guided remotely using a system of sensors on special intra-city or cross-country roadways.

If connected cars are to be thoroughly mainstream, much work is required to ascertain that they are reliable, safe and extremely secure. After all, it is one thing for a computer to crash and another thing when a car’s computer is compromised, causing the automobile to crash. IoT has the power to change the word. And while people are beginning to see the amazing impact of the Internet of Things, the word is still very much at the beginning of the transformational journey. The key to knowing how the Internet of Things would change the word is to understand that it is more regarding the connections instead of the things. When things are connected, they would become greater than the sum of the parts. They get data access they not possess and could share their own data with other people and things too.

The Internet of Things impacts the transportation industry in a huge way. Already, vehicles are using connected things to make driving easier, much safer and convenient.
