Needless to say that the present hype around IoT or the Internet of Things is huge. It seems like every single day, a new organization announces some IoT enabled product. From building, home automation to wearable, IoT touches each facet of people’s lives. It make the development of aps easier with software, hardware and support to get all things connected within the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things Applications

  1. Wearables. These days, wearables remain a hot topic. As consumers are waited for the smart watch of Apple last year, there are numerous other wearable innovations to get people excited. These include the Myo gesture control, Sony Smart B Trainer or LookSee bracelet. Of all the Internet of Things startups, wearables make Jawbone probably the one with the largest funding to date. It stand at over half a billion dollars.
  2. Smart home. Clearly, Smart Home stands out, ranking as highest IoT app on all channels. Over 60,000 people at present search for the Smart Home term every month, which is not surprising. The IoT analytics company database for Smart Home includes 256 startups and organizations. More businesses are active in smart home than any other app in the IoT field. The total funding for Smart Home startups at present exceeds $2.5 billion.
  3. Smart City. The application spans a wide range of use cases, from managing traffic to water distribution, to urban security, waste management and environmental monitoring. The popularity of the app is fueled by the fact that a lot of Smart City solutions promise to alleviate true pains of people living in cities nowadays. The internet of things solutions in the area of Smart City solve traffic congestion, lower noise and pollution and help make safer cities.
  4. Smart grids. It is special. A future smart grid promises using information about the behaviors of electricity suppliers and consumers in an automated manner to boost reliability, efficiency and electricity economics. Monthly 41,000 Google searches highlights the popularity of the concept.
  5. Industrial internet. It is also one of the special IoT apps. While a lot of market researches like Cisco or Gartner see the industrial internet as the IoT concept with highest overall potential, at present, the popularity does not reach the masses such as smart home or wearables. However, the industrial internet has a lot going for it. Industrial internet gets the biggest push on Twitter than other non-consumer oriented Internet of Things concepts.
  6. Connected Health such as Digital health, telemedicine and telehealth. Connected health is still the sleeping giant of IoT apps. The connected health care system concept and smart medical devices bears huge potential, not only for companies but also for the well-being of people in general. However, connected healthy hasn’t reached the masses yet. Prominent use cases and big-scale startup successes are yet to be seen.
  7. Smart retail. Advertising that is proximity-based as a subset of smart retail is beginning to take off. But the ranking in popularity shows that it’s still a niche segment.
  8. Connected car. The app is coming up gradually. Owing to the fact that the cycles of development in the automotive field usually takes two to four years. Most big auto makers and there are also several brave startups that are working on connected car solutions. If Fords and BMWs do not present the next internet connected car generation soon, other renowned giants such as Microsoft, Google and Apple have all announced connected car platforms.
  1. Smart farming. Often is an overlooked business scenario for IoT since it does not really fit into the popular categories like mobility, health or industrial. Nevertheless, because of the remoteness of farming operations and the huge number livestock which could be tracked, IoT could revolutionize how farmers work. However, the idea has not reached large-scale attention yet. Still, it should not be underestimated. Smart farming would be the important app field in countries that are predominantly agricultural-product exporting ones.
  2. Smart supply chain. Smart supply chains are getting smarter for years already. Solutions for goods tracing while on the road, or getting supplies to exchange information on inventory have been around for years. However, it seems that the popularity of the app is still limited.

The internet of things impacts everything, from bandwidth needs to cloud capacity and processing and analyzing data, power and architecture. IoT indeed has reached the peak of inflated expectations, or at the very top of the emerging technologies. It is difficult to ignore the buzz about the Internet of Things, the same way that it is difficult to ignore the impact of connected reality of devices, sensors and more on the amount of data as well as the technologies of capturing, transporting and analyzing all of it.

There is no doubt about it, the Internet of Things is making great waves in all aspects of people’s lives these days.
