Mistakes You Should Avoid While Doing Your Interiors in India

For most people, money spent on interior designing is a long term investment in their mental health and general well-being. It is said that the right interiors can make or break your mental well-being. So it is natural that you spend a decent amount of time, effort and money in creating your interiors. However, despite all the effort one puts in, there are certain standard mistakes most people make. It is largely due to the inexperience or lack of knowledge about technical aspects. This makes the role of an interior designer extremely critical.

Irrespective of whether you have a professional working on your project or not, I’ve compiled a list of mistakes you could avoid while going about decorating your home. After having witnessed tons of clients/friends make these mistakes, I can easily conclude that avoiding some of the following can make your process a lot more smoother:

1. Inadequate research while choosing an interior designer: This is by far the most critical step in your journey of creating your dream space. There are many ways in which people usually go about selecting their interior designer. The most common way is going through references. References are the most solid method of selecting an interior decorator. However, a lot of times people are limited by the references they have. It is good to go beyond and research about the quality of work others are delivering. This exposes you to the best of the lot in the industry.

You may take the help of discovery portals or aggregators for this. Some of the places that may help you are:

a.Houzz: It is one of the most renowned portals where professionals display their work. However, due to lack of popularity locally not all Indian interior designers have registered on it. But it is worth taking a look at.

b.BlueMasons: This is an aggregation firm that analyses your requirements and shows you the work of the most relevant designers for your project. They usually have different specialists for various project types like residential, offices, hotels, retail, etc. It basically is a one stop access to some of the top design firms.

c.Google: It is one of the easiest ways of finding design firms. However you will mostly find the likes of paid ad services and platforms like Justdial and Sulekha crowding this space.

  1. 2. Saving cost by not hiring an interior designer: It is tempting to believe that the amount you pay to your interior designer may otherwise be utilised by you in something more effective. Let me assure you of a well proven fact - Your interior designer will save you a lot of money (enough to fill in for their fee). Right from saving on the unnecessary products, avoiding wastage on materials, labour overtime to better space extraction, this will be the best investment in your property.
  2. 3. Not insisting on a final 3D view: With modern technology most interior designers in Kolkata and other metros will give you a 3 dimensional view of your space even before the start of your work. Now I’ve seen a lot of clients avoiding this step in order to save cost. Firstly, the cost of 3D modelling is very marginal when compared to the total budget of projects and has a lot of advantages.

4. Poor budgeting: There are many steps and aspects to your interior design budget. A lot of costs are involved in every project right from labour, material and designer’s fee. For most residential projects, budgets tend to overshoot primarily due to factors that are beyond control. It is not unhealthy to have a deviation of 8-10%. But the budgets are extremely tight for most office interior designer projects as return on investment matters there.

  1. 5. Not being involved in material selection: Although it is challenging to be a part of every product decision for your kolkata home interior designing or office, it is extremely important for you to be a party to some of the more critical areas, after all, it is you who is going to occupy the space. Furniture, chairs, furnishings, tiles and lights are some of the most crucial design elements that’ll shape your space. Give some time to it.
  2. 6. Not balancing loud pieces with sober ones: Every time you visit a store shopping for your home interiors, you’ll come across a lot of standout pieces perfect for your bedroom. I’ve seen people overdo this. As they say, too many cooks spoil the broth. It is crucial that you balance your living room or your bedroom design with one or two master standout elements, however, the remaining have to be sober enough to make the former standout. For example, you may have one textured wall and balance the other three with something extremely light.
  3. 7. Not leaving adequate free space: With time, apartments and offices are growing smaller in size. The rooms are not half as big as they were before. But our dreams? They don’t seem to be shrinking anytime soon. We all plan so many elements for our house, hotel, cafe or office interiors. However, due to space restrictions I’ve seen people add too many things, much beyond the design capacity of the space.

The free space in your property is an asset. Most best interior designers in kolkatausually balance things out with adequate open spaces in every home or office they design.

8. Ignore climate and local adaptability: It is tempting to live in a hill station in a private villa with huge windows and the sunlight entering the room all day long. The designs look fascinating and that’s the brief you give to your interior designer.

Reality check: You may probably be living one of the hottest places on earth with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees during the day. The cooling cost of your space will kill you faster than the heat if do not understand how interior design needs to adapt to your immediate environment. Draw inspirations, but be practical. That’s the mantra. I’ve written about common adaptations that may not be right for interior designing in kolkata or india for that matter.
