Discover the Beauty of the Roads Less Travelled in Morocco
Posted: Mar 24, 2014
Both exotic and perennial, Morocco continues to be a favourite destination for many tourists. Every year, around 10 million local and international travellers arrive in the country, most of them heading to Casablanca or Marrakesh. And it's no wonder: the two cities are truly stunning and brimming with vibrancy and colour. But the country offers many alternatives to these two locations, which are equally breath-taking and can be enjoyed best by walking. Morocco is an exotic destination full of surprises that will delight visitors and invite them enjoy its best-kept secrets.
Rabat, the Capital Despite Rabat being the country's capital, tourists usually head to nearby Casablanca to experience its magic. However, Rabat is a gem on its own. Only a short distance away by train, the capital city is small enough to discover best by walking. Morocco has plenty of marvellous architectural jewels, and quite a number of them can be found in Rabat. For instance, Mohammed V’s mausoleum is definitely worth visiting, as well as the city’s art deco cathedral. For a dose of history, visit the ruins of the Chellah in all its bronze-coloured glory. The best thing about these attractions is that not only are they a big part of the city’s history, they are also not as crowded as their more famous counterparts. Guided tours are the ideal way to find your way around Rabat, not only to optimize time, but also to learn valuable information about the city from helpful tour leaders.
El Jadida
Another relatively close destination from Casablanca is El Jadida. Once you arrive (usually by train), the city is best travelled on foot. In 2004, El Jadida was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you'll soon understand why when you begin walking. Morocco is a fusion of old and new, and this is magnificently visible in its many cities - El Jadida included. One of the port city’s definitive attractions is the fortress of Mazagan, with its superb stone ramparts and its 16th century cistern, which, according to UNESCO, is the city’s most significant structure from the Portuguese period. The city can be easily and efficiently explored: it can be toured within a day, and you can be sure it will be worth every second.
Scarabeo Camp
Another less crowded alternative for a walking tour is the Scarabeo Camp, a few miles away from Marrakesh. Although it is still near some of the more popular destinations, you will feel like you are millions of miles from civilization, thanks to its ideal location. Scarabeo Camp is flanked by the Atlas Mountains and the dunes that envelop it provide a magical effect, especially at sunset. When touring here by walking, Morocco will transform into an exquisite adventure as you enjoy the sights and sounds of the desert. Scarabeo Camp is a perfect destination for hiking whether in spring or winter. At night, astronomers can assist with lessons in the proper way of stargazing. Through the huge telescopes available, you will be amazed at how close the constellations seem – this experience alone makes Scarabeo Camp worth visiting.
