Presence of earrings in the history of mankind

Earrings are one of the most visible and beautiful piece of jewelry which have its own history to tell. Earrings have their own importance in different moment of life weather talking about ancient time medieval time or modern days.

Earrings were used to worn by both sexes, although were more common among women, and have been used by different civilizations in different periods of time. Earring may be made of any material or with any number of materials, including metal, plastic, precious stone, beads, wood and other materials. There are various designs ranging from small loops and studs to large and dangling earrings available in gold carved in precious stones and diamonds.

Ancient evidence of man wearing earrings can be seen in archeological evidence from Persepolis in ancient Persia. The carved images of soldiers of the Persian Empire, displayed on walls of the palace, show them wearing an earring. In present days also earrings are in fashion among courtiers and gentlemen.It was described in a document published in 1577 by Clergyman William Harrison, Description of England, in which it was described that "Some lusty courtiers and gentlemen of courage do wear either rings of gold, stones or pearls in their ears. By the late 1950s or early 1960s, the practice of wearing earrings re-emerged, but due to lack in presence of big commercial market, practice of ear piercings were mostly done at home. At that time teenage girls were used to hold ear piercing parties, to perform the procedure of ear piercing on one another. By the mid of 1960s, some physicians started offering ear piercing as a service.By the early 1970s, ear piercing was common among women, which created broader market for earrings. Department stores throughout the country would hold ear piercing events, sponsored by earring manufacturers. At these events, a nurse or other trained person would perform the procedure, either pushing a sharpened and sterilized starter earring through the earlobe by hand, or using an ear-piercing instrument modified from the design used by physicians.

In the late 1970s, amateur piercings used to be done with some safety pins or multiple piercings, became popular among the punk rock community. By the 1980s, the trend for male popular music performers to have pierced ears helped establish a fashion trend for men. This was later adopted by many professional athletes. Moat common earrings among rich people at that time were diamond earrings.
