Male pattern baldness and alopecia are effectively treated with a hair transplant surgery. Serious hair loss condition is however infrequent or very rare in the female population. The following FAQs deal with some basic facts and concerns of the patients -

1. What Is Hair Transplant Procedure?

Hair transplant surgery is an aesthetic and reconstructive surgery for restoration of hair on a balding human scalp. The disease or pattern of hair loss determines the need for surgical intervention. After consultations and diagnosis, the surgeon suggests this specific treatment modality due to permanent or irreversible baldness.

Venues such as Cosmed hair transplant clinic are an ideal location for plastic and cosmetic treatments.

The patient has to undergo a procedure in which the healthy hair from donor area is excised or cut out. The surgeon preps the bald area and inserts this excised piece of scalp or hair units. There are various techniques for safely grafting the healthy hairs to recipient area.

The advanced treatments namely Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are now commonly suggested across the world. The results depend on various factors, but the objective is hair re-growth on both donor and recipient areas.

2. What Are The Traditional Methods

Traditional hair grafting started in the 1900s to treat trauma patients with burns and injuries. Hair bearing skin flaps were removed from donor areas and grafted on the hairless parts of the scalp. This technique is commonly known as the strip method or Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT).

The surgeon excises or cuts out a linear strip of the scalp from the side or back of the head. Skilful surgeons are accurate and precise and they eliminate redundancy.

The patient is administered local anaesthesia before the procedure is started by the surgeon to reduce pain. The excised patch is grafted back on to the recipient area where there is visible baldness. One disadvantage is the "plug type" or unnatural look after new hair grows back.

The donor area also has a clearly visible excision area which may be covered with adjacent hairs. Pain and bleeding are normal, but scarring is eliminated or minimized.

3. Are There Any Modern Techniques?

FUE or Follicular unit extraction is a more advanced method for hair replacement and restoration. The development of microscopic instruments has improved understanding of natural hair growth parts or follicular units.

In FUE method, tiny punch excision is used to extract just 1 or 2 hairs with diameter of 1mm or less. The excised hair is punched back on to the pre-determined recipient areas with baldness.

The extraction of tiny punches is random, and there is no large or visible donor area on the scalp. Modern instruments apply pneumatic pressure on the scalp, and there is no fear of injury or excessive bleeding. This surgery has been a boon to both male and female patients with permanent or patterned baldness.

Note: More advanced techniques such as scalp reduction and reconstruction are also prescribed by a cosmetic surgeon. These methods rely on tissue expansion and pulling up the hair bearing segment of the scalp.
