An Indian wedding is a magnificent affair with abundant ceremonies, festival-like celebrations and lavish dinners. During the ceremonies, attention is directed towards the attires of bride and the groom. They are the centre of attraction, and hence, should look stunning - separate from the crowd. This, combined with the fact that it's the moment of their lifetime, is the reason why both of them spend months planning their outfits, even their shoes and accessories.

If you thought that the perfect attributes of an immaculately dressed Indian groom were simply a rich embroidered sherwani, a stole worn round the neck, then take note of all the different dressing choices of the modern Indian groom outfit listed below.

Choosing wedding attire is no easy task, especially since every groom wishes to look like a prince charming. From choosing the overall idea of the outfit to planning the minor details of embroideries and accessories, you'd think the Indian groom had just as large a job as his bride in choosing an outfit. After all, this is the moment every groom has imagined all his life and he has to look nothing but the best.

Achkan:

The incorporation of the British style of clothing into Indian attire produced Achkan. It is a long men's coat that features long sleeves with full front button closure and a high, round neck. The neckline is often referred to as a Nehru, or Chinese collar. It is made of rich and light fabric. The collars, edges and seams are often embroidered. This jacket is paired with churidars, tightly-fit trousers which have a buttoned-cuff at the ankles and fall into churis, folds at the end. It signifies elegance and style.

Sherwani:

A sherwani is a long garment which resembles Achkan. However, it is worn over a kurta, is made of a heavier fabric and is lined in the middle. It is three-piece attire, the coat, kurta and the pyjamas, dhoti or a churidar. The length of the coat is till the knee and fits close to the body. It is open down the front and has ethnic embroidery around the edges.

The pyjamas, dhoti or churidar is of the contrasting color which further accentuates the beauty of the attire. A duppatta, or a stole, is draped over one or both the shoulders. It is ornately decorated. A sherwani signifies the dignity and etiquette of the nobility.

Kurta-Pyjama:

The kurta consists of loose and light comfortable drawstring trousers called pyjama and a long, loose knee-length shirt with slits on both the sides. In has intricate embroidery giving it a very rich look. Pyjama comes either in tight-fitting or loose-fitting options. A duppatta or a stole can be worn with it to provide an ethnic look. Pyjamas can also be adorned with crystals.

Jodhpuri Suit:

If you want a mélange of the Indian tradition and the Western sensibilities attached to it, then Jodhpuri suits are for you. It is three-piece suit that includes a coat, a shirt and formal trousers. The coat is shorter as compared to the achkan and the sherwani, similar to the length of a Western coat. It opens in the front with embroidery along the button line and the collar. The trousers and the coat are of the same color. It may also have a waistcoat underneath.

Western Suits:

When the traditional Indian groom decides to turn more modern, he can choose to wear a western suit with or without a waistcoat. Tiepins, a brooch, a dazzling watch and formal shoes add to the charm of the look.

Safa:

A safa is a traditional turban with a jeweled brooch pinned to the front or a delicate feather, called kilangi, perched on the top. It symbolizes pride since the groom is represented as a king. It is made of opulent fabrics like silk or brocade with intricate embroidery and beaded folds.

Sehra:

The sehra are the flower-vines hanging over the front of the safa. Sehra is placed on the turban because it is to believe to keep away evil.

Mojari:

Mojari is a pair of padded, slip-on shoes from Rajasthan. This special footwear is heavily embroidered and ornamented. It was traditionally worn by Indian royalty, but today people wear mojari for very special occasions, like wedding ceremonies for Bengali, Gujarati or Telugu matrimony.
