It might not be the most elegant approach but it’s the safest way to go.

To do it, first find the emoji image you want. There are several emoji reference sites around. We’re using iEmoji.com because it has a picture option. Many of the other sites copy the symbol with font settings which isn’t what we need.

From iEmoji.com, click on the emoji you want then Picture. After a short delay a dialog will appear.Emoticons are those funny little faces people love to put in their e-mails. You know the type, made with colons, dashes, and other characters. For instance, :-) is an emoticon for a smiley face. (Look at it sideways and you see two eyes, a nose, and a smiling mouth.)

If you type an emoticon Word, it is automatically transformed into a "dingbat" character that shows the smiling face, frowning face, or neutral face. The following are the different emoticons and how they are converted:

  1. Launch Word and open the document you will insert the smiley face in.
  2. Click the "Insert" tab on the Ribbon and select "Shapes."
  3. Click the Smiley Face icon under the Basic Shapes heading. A plus-sign cursor replaces the pointer cursor.
  4. Position the cursor at the position you will insert the Smiley Face graphic and click the mouse. The Smiley Face, whose default color is blue, will appear on the document.
  5. Click the Smiley Face. The Drawing Tools tab ribbon opens.
  6. Click "Shape Fill." Hover the cursor over the color palette in the Shape Fill menu to preview the change.
  7. Click the desired color from the Shape Fill menu.
