With the impending problems encircling the traffic congestion at the toll plazas, it is the need of the hour to implement ways that would not just look into the issue but cater resolutions to the problems. The National Highways Authority of India is set to instigate ways to mitigate such issues concerning the traffic flow near the toll plazas in the country. NHAI is working on their new project which will implement ways to ensure 24x7 surveillance of the traffic flow near the toll plazas.

The authorities are going to deploy a hi-tech video surveillance system for the real-time mapping of the vehicle flow at the toll gates across the various national highways in the country. There has been no intimation regarding the date of installation of the project but the officials have stated that the process is in progress now and is going to be successfully implemented within the coming six months or so. The first phase of installation is going to witness the implementation of the cameras around 10 of the major toll plazas around the country. Following the successful implementation of the first phase, the officials are expecting to extend the same up to 200 toll plazas.

The deployment of these cameras around the toll plazas are going to provide with real-time data about the traffic flow and the issues concerning the same to the regional offices, command centre and the headquarters of National Highways Authority of India. They are going to provide with pulse feedback which will ensure prompt response during times of emergency. The officials have confirmed stating that the work for the successful implementation of the project is in progress and is going to be implemented in the coming few months. NHAI has also administered the command centres and regional offices with high speed (100 Mbps) internet for prompt surveillance.

The Chief General Manager of NHAI, Mr Akhilesh Srivastava stated that the 24x7 surveillance cameras are going to provide with time-stamped pictures to the NHAI Command Centres and the various Regional Offices Command Room every 30 minutes. The same is going to be functional when the traffic flow is minimal and not that busy. In case of heightened traffic congestion, the camera is going to switch to video mode and stream real-time videos of the toll plazas integrated with alarm and alert system depending on the escalation matrix. The officials further claimed that the surveillance would aid in catering immediate resolutions to ease the traffic flow.

This is not the first step taken by the Government in this regard, the Traffic Incident Management System being one of the few. The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr Nitin Gadkari stated that the Government, along with assistance from NHAI is going to sign an agreement with the Korean Expressway Corporation which uses sophisticated audio-visual technology for monitoring the traffic flow near the toll plazas. The authorities are thinking of integrating similar technology for a streamlined monitoring of the traffic across the busiest national highways in India.
