Getting to Know Son Bou, Menorca

Despite being part of the famously party-centric Balearic Islands, Menorca has a different approach to the concept of a beach break. In places such as Mahon, Ciutadella or Son Bou, holidays are more about enjoying quiet relaxation time with your partner or family than the bustling, noisy, non-stop partying environment of neighbouring Mallorca. As a result, the smallest of the Balearics has traditionally attracted an older and more established crowd than its neighbouring islands; they are drawn to the peace and quiet, quaint architecture and excellent cuisine this resort offers.

That is not to say, however, that those taking Cala Galdana, Ciutadella or Son Bou holidays will be short of things to see or do whilst staying on the island. Much to the contrary – while not offering major urban centres or a bustling nightlife, Menorca provides its guests with enough activities to make a holiday there thoroughly enjoyable.

A Quiet and Central Location

As far as locations to spend a break in Menorca go, a perennial favourite is Son Bou. Holidays spent in this location offer all the peace and quiet the average visitor to Menorca demands, while still keeping them within easy access of enough activities and places of interest to keep them and their family entertained for the duration of the break.

Menorca’s two main urban centres, for instance – Ciutadella and the capital, Mahon – are both a short half-hour drive away, providing the required dose of culture (both towns have several museums), cinemas and theatres, and places in which to taste genuine Menorcan flavours. Both towns, while by no means large, will provide a pleasant day out for tourists enjoying Son Bou holidays.

Charming In Its Own Right

At the same time, the resort and surrounding area itself offers its fair share of eateries, catering to every taste. There are, of course, numerous restaurants specialising in local food, but there are also some serving international dishes, including some which cater to the large British population of visitors to the Balearics.

What’s more, for the type of tourist who generally frequents Menorca – namely families, often with small children – Son Bou is an ideal location. The area provides numerous sources of entertainment for the younger members of the holiday party. Those less fond of this kind of entertainment, however, will also find plenty of beaches and wildlife walks with which to engage the young ones.

Along with all these factors, the fabulous beach and wonderful laidback atmosphere makes this lovely location one of the prime places to use as a home base on a Menorcan holiday.
