If you're considering a vacation in Italy, why not visit the lovely region of Tuscany? This stunning area at the heart of the country is famous for its wonderful cuisine, magnificent scenery and rich cultural heritage. Tuscany is blessed with sublime summer weather and, all in all, is a wonderful place to spend a vacation in Italy. Apart from boasting some of the best museums in the world in some of the most magnificent cities, Tuscany has plenty on offer those wanting to do something a little different when on holiday.

Cycling Through the Tuscan Countryside

Tuscany is ideal for cycling and has routes to accommodate all levels of ability. Whether you are travelling with a young family or are an avid road cycler, there are endless places to explore when on vacation in Italy, and in Tuscany in particular. Many companies offer specific itineraries, some guided and some self-guided, some on-road and some off-road. Imagine cycling through the Tuscan countryside, stopping for a picnic in one of the hilltop towns, tasting wine at local vineyards, visiting places of interest and returning to a comfortable hotel or villa for the evening?

When you think of Tuscany, most people think of rolling hills and hilltop towns – a landscape that can be testing for those travelling on two wheels. There are, however, many routes that weave along valley bottoms and avoid the tougher, hillier territory. If you do fancy trying out a hill or two, you can take pride in the fact that you are more than likely going to be riding along the pathway of some true cycling greats, including Bartali and Cipollini.

As a nation, the Italians love to cycle and along the way you will be greeted by other cyclists who will more than likely give you a wave or a nod in acknowledgement as they pass. Cyclists are a little community of their own, and should you have any bike trouble along the way, you can rest assured the next cyclist to come along will stop to lend a hand.

If you are thinking of a cycling vacation in Tuscany, you do need to pick your time carefully, however. March to June and September to October are the best months as the temperatures are much more pleasant than in July and August, when the area can get very hot and barren too. If you do wish to ride in these months, make sure you cycle in the early mornings and late afternoons and stay very hydrated. Perhaps leave the wine tasting until you have put the bike away for the evening too!

If you're looking for an exciting and independent Italian adventure, a cycling trip is the ideal option. Explore under your own steam, taking in the sites you want, visiting the towns you choose and enjoying a true Italian experience.
