Goa is no more the only destination for a weekend beach getaway anymore, especially for South Indians. Come every long weekend, people usually used to head to either Goa or Pondicherry as they were the only beach places that were close by. But that’s not the case anymore, there is another popular destination currently. A beauty of a place that remains unknown to many- Gokarna. Situated on the coastal belt of Karnataka, Gokarna is a small town that’s barely 3 hours from Goa. Once a quaint and silent town, this place is now home to tourists who want a quick and peaceful getaway. Unlike Goa, people do not come here to party, they come to relax and indulge in some ‘me’ time.
If you haven’t visited Gokarna yet, it’s about time you did before more people find out about it and the place becomes completely commercial. There aren’t enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe the beauty of this place is. Surrounded by lush greenery and clean beaches, the place is where you need to be if you need a break from your mundane life. Where to stay in Gokarna?
Unlike the popular beach places, Gokarna does not have fancy hotels and resorts. In fact, you’ll find hardly one or two resorts near Gokarna. There are a few shacks near the beach where you can camp but other than that all you can find are budget hotels. If you want a classy yet comfortable accommodation, we suggest that you find something a little away from Gokarna. There are several homestays on the way to Gokarna, one of them being Kinara Stay. This homestay is located in Kumta, just 45 minutes from Gokarna and offers comfortable accommodation for reasonable prices.
What to do?
There honestly isn’t much to do in Gokarna if we are being honest. The place is definitely not for those who want to party it up until the wee hours of the evening. Don’t get us wrong, you can party it up but not at pubs or bars, most likely at the place you are staying. There are a few adventure water sports on some of the beaches near Gokarna that you can indulge in. Other than that, we suggest relaxing on the beach, reading a book, taking a walk, trekking (with precaution), and shopping at the local markets.
What to eat?
You can’t go to Gokarna and not try out the seafood there. Visit the shacks on the beaches for the best and freshest seafood dishes. Also, don’t hesitate to try out the local cuisine and if you are daring enough, the local liquor. Most of the shacks also serve continental, so finding food of your choice won’t be a problem here.
