The axiom ‘content is king’ has stood the test of time. What helps this truism actually hold true is that good content is usually accompanied by fitting design elements. Some design mistakes are easy to avoid, while some might be very tricky to spot.

The two big design errors you must steer clear of include:

  1. Lack of images

This mistake is one that occurs because of something you didn’t do and not because you did something wrong. Forgetting to include an image or graphic with your social media post is giving up a valuable opportunity to connect and engage with your audience. Images help capture attention of people who scan and skim through content or even readers with short attention spans. With all the time that is spent on carefully curating content to attract your audience, leaving out images is a simple and easily avoidable mistake. Human beings are visual creatures; we tend to remember and retain information better when it is accompanied by visuals. As our eyes dart across the page, images compel us to slow down and pause to read content. Choosing the right image to go with your content requires adopting a design thinking mindset and making communication design an integral part of the content planning process. Powerful visual storytelling can be achieved through communication design.

As students who are part of communication design courses in India learning to visualize everything you see and hear is probably like second nature to you by now. Your mind automatically converts anything you read or listen to, as if a movie was playing in your head.

  1. Lack of brand identity

Including images or graphics in your content is only effective if these visuals reflect a strong brand identity. All brands have defined colors and fonts that best represent their voice. Style preferences and graphic elements should be incorporated to create strong design elements.

Color usage is another important component of good design. Understand the significance of colors and what they represent before including them in your design.

Studying from the best design colleges in India will only be meaningful if you take care to get such seemingly small but significant details to get designing right. Keep an eye out for these errors and make smart design decisions.
