Rome Trip is incomplete without visiting Colosseum. It was constructed between 70 - 80 AD under the Flavian Dynasty, It is one of the popular and iconic monuments in the world. It was used gladiator tournaments, animal hunts, games and many other types of entertainment during that time and has the capacity of holding 50 to 80 thousand spectators.

Today the massive amphitheater is the first choice among travelers. Approx more than 6 million tourist visit Colosseum every year and in 2007 it became one of the New 7 wonders of world. Along with 7 wonders of world, it is also a great engineering wonder.

When to go?

During season time you will find Colosseum full of travelers. So the best time to explore Colosseum is during low season months from November through February.

In summers or during a season, the best time to visit is 8:30 in the morning when it first opens. Even in high season, you will still find rush and crowds at this hour, but much smaller crowds than later in the day.

Second best time to visit Colosseum during peak season is one hour before last entry or before it actually closes, so if you go about an hour before that, you will have enough time to enjoy it and not feel rushed.

8:30 AM - 6:30 PM from Oct 1 to last Sunday of Oct

8:30 AM - 4:30 PM from the last Sunday of Oct to Dec 31

Entrance

To visit Colosseum you have to Book Ticket.

Tickets

We advise you to book tickets in advance during season time. You can book tickets from the ticket office (closest ticket office is in Roman Forum) but you have to stand long in queues, so we recommend to Book tickets Online and save time and money.

Free tickets are also available for citizens under 18 and for Italian Public Institute Teachers.

Some facts about Colosseum

Colosseum was built from stone and concrete, this magnificent monument was constructed with the manpower of 60 thousand Jewish slaves.

This monument is the largest amphitheater in the world. It is an Oval shaped building which measures 189 meters in length, 156 meters in width and 50 meters in height. It could easily fit a modern day football ground inside.

It had 80 entrances and could accommodate approximately 60,000 spectators who would come to watch various events. These events included gladiatorial combats, wild animal hunts and also ship naval battles (during naval ship battle they flooded the Colosseum with water).

To gain popularity and support among people it was accessed by every citizen with free food.

The events at the Colosseum were seriously brutal where near about 10,000 animals were killed in a single day.

It was estimated that more than 400,000 people and 1 million animals died inside the Colosseum.
