What Does A Booking Agency Do?

Booking agencies are organisations made up of booking agents. Their job is to represent talented individuals, artists and celebrities, connecting them with profitable opportunities in the entertainment industry. Agencies like Mn2S have what they call a "roster", a catalogue of artists, entertainers, celebrities and musicians that they work with, securing opportunities on their behalf.

Booking agents spend much of their time in an office, contacting artists, managers and event promoters in order to arrange gigs and shows. Agencies can be large, or small – there are a number of larger, ‘multi-national’ agencies that operate out of the main entertainment hubs (London, NYC, LA), in addition to smaller independent agencies that have more selective rosters. Some agencies focus on certain genres or styles, and some will aim for a broader representation, working with artists of all kinds from all backgrounds.

Each individual agent in a booking agency often has their own personal roster, a list of artists that they work with directly –as artists and celebrities prefer to have a connection with ‘their’ agent, a person who will consistently represent them across different situations. Talented musicians invariably lead busy lives, and their occupation requires focus and dedication: their job is to hone their craft and perform, not to spend their days on the computer or phone, booking their next show or arranging the tour itinerary. Agencies and agents give talents the time and space to do what they love, by freeing them from the responsibility of organising their own live schedules.

Booking agencies vary considerably from company to company. Some are music-focused, choosing to work with bands, singers and live performers, booking gigs for festivals and venues. Some work exclusively with DJs, networking with club promoters to arrange DJ sets at club nights. There are agencies that work with celebrities, rather than musicians, organising appearances at events and public speaking engagements. Many agencies like MN2S do all of these things under one roof. This allows them to generate cross-over in opportunity for their clients, putting together musicians with bookings in theatre or television, and vice versa.

Some agencies also do more than just make bookings. These so-called multi-faceted agencies, like the MN2S music agency in London offer a wider range of services that complement their core business model and give clients the opportunity to benefit from a variety of functions. These include providing assistance to artists and record labels with PR, social media management, publishing, distribution, sync, licensing, rights management, and design. Multi-faceted agencies have experience and expertise that goes beyond disciplines, covering multiple areas of the music industry. This allows them to respond quickly to new trends wherever they appear. The entertainment business is complex and ever-changing, and agencies that have employees working in PR, social media, label management, distribution are better positioned to spot important developments early on, allowing them to operate from an informed perspective. The connections and crossover between these areas enable agencies to secure increased opportunities for both talent and the agency themselves.
