Considering Christmas Island Accommodation? Packing for this Photographer’s Paradise
Posted: Jan 13, 2019
Christmas Island hotels provide a fantastic base to explore this wonderful destination. However, if you want to get some superb shots, you can’t rely on your Christmas Island accommodation to provide everything you need, and you’ll need to properly pack for this photographer’s paradise. So, here we’ll explore some of the best kit you’ll need to bring with you to your Christmas Island resort.
The Basics
Before you even think about packing your photography bag, you’ll need to think about the basics. You’ll need sunnies, a hat, bug spray, block out and comfortable clothing and shoes. Remember that you’ll be hitting the trails and some of the less travelled paths, so pack comfortable shoes that will provide you with adequate foot support and protection. The sun can be very harsh, so it is worth packing a lightweight shirt that can be thrown over your outfit to protect your shoulders and arms.
A Drone
If you want to capture nature without a risk of disturbing the wildlife, a drone is a fantastic tool. You can not only track a moving subject, but you’ll be able to get some amazing footage as you fly over the coastline and other areas that may be a little tricky to access on foot. Christmas Island has a plethora of stunning landscapes, but you’ll need great timing as you fly over blowholes to avoid the drone being sprayed off course.
50 Megapixel DSLR Camera
With a telephoto lens, this type of camera will allow you to capture the native birds in flight in amazing detail. Pack a macro lens and ring flash to get close up shots of the Christmas Island mushrooms, crabs, ferns, moss, geckos and fungi and a wide angle lens for landscapes, seascapes, and rainforest pictures.
GoPro
If your GoPro has a built-in touch display, you’ll be able to adjust all your settings and compose a great shot. These are almost indestructible cameras that are up to 40 metres waterproof, so you can capture the vibrant, active coral reef system with crystal clear shots. The crystal clear waters have fantastic visibility with colourful fish, bright sandy patches, reef forms and deep water drop off walls to provide some once in a lifetime pictures.
Laptop and Photo Storage
Packing your laptop will allow you to view, process, cull and upload your photos and videos to your social media accounts. It is also a good idea to bring a variety of USB hard drives to backup and store your photos. Opt for solid state drives that are not only light and small but will not drain your battery life. Of course, you’ll need to bring all your various chargers, but there is no need to excessively drain your battery with a power hungry hard drive.
