Son Bou – The Best of Menorca

It’s natural that different people want different things out of their annual holidays – and when it comes to visiting Son Bou, holidays on the island of Menorca are no exception to that.

Naturally, there will be some people who aren't as attracted to this lovely resort as others; they'll usually be the ones looking for a break with a bit of hustle and bustle and late night fun. Now, some people may love dancing in the street until 4am and falling into bed as the sun rises, and there's nothing at all wrong with that – but if you prefer the more subtle delights of Son Bou, holidays will take on a more relaxed, genteel air.

This resort, like much of the island of Menorca overall, is a very laid-back and discrete place. There are, of course, some bars, restaurants and dancing in one of the only two larger hotels, but it’s generally pretty calm and aimed largely at couples and families.

That culture really permeates the entire locale. It has a magnificent beach, which is Menorca’s longest, which offers some great water sports, and there’s a large area of protected sand dunes behind the beach, with nature trail access and plenty of great walking trails as well.

In fact, this location is very big on landscape protection and conservation – as is much of Menorca. Building has always been strictly controlled and you won’t see the forest of high-rises that are so commonplace in many other Spanish resorts anywhere near Son Bou. Holidays to the resort are almost like a step back in time – in the best possible way.

There are plenty of country-based activities as well, if you’re not one to spend your entire time on the beach or by the pool. Apart from walking, there’s cycling and horse-riding if you’d like to explore some of the surrounding countryside.

On the beach, entertainment is mainly sport based and there’s plenty to do for young and old alike. What you won’t see (or at least not often), are huge crowds of teenagers wandering around looking for something to do. It’s all pretty calm and bathing is generally accepted to be very safe – but, of course, always follow local safety instructions and watch out for children at all times just as you would anywhere near water.

The resort is on the island’s south coast and close to the island’s capital of Mahon. It’s also not far from the other great attraction, the island’s ancient capital of Ciutadella. This means it offers a nice mix of quiet away-from-it-all beachside relaxation along with easy access to some quite chic and cultural centres for exploration and retail therapy.

Some people say Menorca offers everything that’s good about the Balearics and nothing that’s bad. When you visit Son Bou, holidays to the island take on an even more unique and relaxed vibe.
