What’s the beach like?

The beach is typically regarded as the most beautiful on Menorca. It’s one of the longest on the island and bathing is usually regarded as being safe (but watch out for local warnings, advice and be careful with kids as always).

Are there plenty of shops?

Yes and no. There are plenty of local shops and supermarkets for the basics, but if you want a little more glamour in your retail therapy then you’ll need to make the short trip to the island’s capital Mahon or to the other major centre of Ciutadella rather than Son Bou. Holidays are different for everyone and some people's idea of heaven is, in fact, the absence of a retail strip.

Is this an 18-30 resort?

Lots of younger couples, families and singles come to this resort, but if by "18-30" you mean a 24/7 boozing and partying culture then no, it most certainly isn’t. It’s laid-back, relaxed, discerning and perhaps slightly ‘alternative’ in its feel.

Is it a big resort?

No – although of course, that does rather depend on what you mean by ‘big’. There are two larger hotels at one end of the beach and some smaller ones. Accommodation is based around low-rise villas, apartments and houses. There really aren’t any ‘big’ resorts by the standards of, say, Majorca or Ibiza.

How long is the transfer from the airport?

If you take a shuttle bus, the transfer time will be around 50-60 minutes. By car or taxi, it’s about 30-45 minutes depending upon how you drive and the traffic.

Is there something to do at night?

Yes, there are some nice restaurants, bars and cafés to explore within a short drive. In the larger hotels you’ll find entertainment that’s open to the public, including discos and so on. What you typically won’t see on Son Bou holidays are people overindulging and becoming rowdy and raucous in public.

Can you explore the sand dunes?

Yes and no. The situation can change from one period to another, so check locally. Generally, however, access to the sand dunes is restricted in order to protect the natural habitat. So, access and exploration paths through them are marked out and visitors are asked to respect those. Of course, there aren’t exactly minefields and machine gun posts set up to stop you entering, but it is prohibited and the vast majority of visitors are responsible and respect that.

Can you walk elsewhere?

Yes, you can. Strolling along the long beach and coastline beyond is a favourite pastime – particularly in the early mornings or later evenings before/after the heat of the day.There are some fantastic coves in the area also. You can also try some of the inland nature trails, where you’ll get a chance to see the local flora and fauna.

Is it hot?

It depends when you’re visiting, but in July and August you should expect average daily temperatures around 27-28C. However, keep in mind that Menorca is a small island. What that means is that it’s pretty well cooled by regular if not continual gentle sea breezes. In Son Bou, holidays should stay mainly fine for the most part. Temperatures will be suitable for anyone except, perhaps, those who are very sensitive to high temperatures – but then that would apply to any Mediterranean holiday in the summer months.
