Introduction

Learning plays a very important role in mans’ life. Every man is always learning throughout his life. It is commonly said that the process of learning is continuous and never stops. This is true.

Different people have different styles of learning. All individuals are categorized into three basic styles of learning namely, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Knowing what type of a learner you are will help you learn better and more quickly. All these three learning styles require different methods so that their learners remain motivated and attentive in class.

These three learning styles were proposed by Fleming and known as Fleming’s VAK model.

According to the three learning styles there are following types of learners:

Types of learners:

1. Visual learners:

According to Fleming, visual learners have to view or see the material so as to learn.

They learn by viewing and seeing the given information. These types of learners are advised to make use of charts, figures and diagrams while learning.

  • Strengths: they are capable of following directions instinctively and have the ability to visualize objects easily. They also possess a good sense of alignment and balance and can be very good organizers.
  • Way to learn: Visual learners must make use of charts, diagrams, overhead slides and PowerPoint presentations in order to learn better.
  • How to identify a visual learner?

Visual learners are capable of taking notes and learning well while being offered with visual information. They are capable of constructing their own diagrams and charts based on the information they see.

2. Auditory Learners:

These types of learners learn best by listening. They absorb information just by hearing it. Auditory listeners can take in information by reading but they will not be able to understand that information clearly unless they hear it.

  • Strengths: they can understand even the slightest change or variation in tone of an individual’s voice. They are good at solving problems. Oral exams, story-telling, can write responses to any kind of lectures and so on.
  • Ways of learning: recording class notes and hearing them, read out loud, asking friends to read out loud or studying in groups, taking part orally in the classroom.

3. Kinesthetic learners:

These learners are known as tactile learners. They have a habit of moving while learning and can absorb beat when they use their hands while studying. Tactile learners may sometimes be prey to short attention periods wherein they lack concentration for a long time.

  • Strengths: they possess a great eye-hand co-ordination, they are excellent experimenters, quick at reception, sportive and active, good in drama and arts, and they possess high levels of energy.
  • Ways of learning: Experimenting, moving or standing while learning, doodling while attending lecture, learning while shooting hoops or bouncing a ball.

Conclusion:

You can refer to the above styles of learning and find out what type of a learner you are. Observe what suits you best while learning and try finding out which method will help you learn best.
