Badagry Black Heritage Museum
The Badagry Black Heritage Museum is an intriguing institution dating back to 1863, which preserves a large number of artefacts, relics and documents related to over 300 years of Nigeria’s slave exportation that ran through the historic town of Badagry. The museum is home to a series of galleries which offer an enlightening insight into the victims of the slave trade and the difficult and dark past of this region.
Kalakuta Republic Museum
The Kalakuta Republic Museum is the former residence and recording studio of famous Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti, who is an important figure of Nigeria’s past. The museum tells a story of Fela’s life and struggles and also showcases some of his personal items, including musical instruments, album covers, paintings and clothes, as well as his bedroom which is in the same condition that it was left in.
Nike Art Centre
The spectacular Nike Art Centre was founded by famed Nigerian artist and designer Nike Davies-Okundaye, which displays an immense collection of colourful artworks created by artists all across Nigeria and Africa. The art pieces are set across four floors and include sculptures, paintings, textiles and carvings, and there’s also a gift shop selling arts and crafts. This gallery is an ideal visit if you want to learn more about Nigeria’s art and culture.
Red Door Art Gallery
This distinct art institution is small but very wonderful, with a great passion for art. It promotes unpredictable and unconventional artworks, offering a unique gallery experience for visitors. The collection at the Red Door Art Gallery mainly comprises of African contemporary masterpieces and there are curators available which take you round the gallery and teach you about the exhibits and artists.
