Dalaman - Gateway to Turkey’s Best
Posted: Jun 27, 2014
A Dalaman transfer can get you quickly and easily to your final holiday destination in one of the fantastic resorts in this part of Turkey. Here's what you should know about the region before you go.
History
There’s simply too much history in this ancient land to even attempt to summarise in a brief article. The Lycians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Venetians, and the Turks have all made their homes here over the past 3000 years. Each has contributed to modern Turkey in this area and many have left very tangible evidence of their passing in various towns, cities and ruins.
Perhaps more pertinently for holidays, Turkey was perhaps fortunate in being a little behind countries such as Spain and Italy in developing its tourism industry in the 20th century. That meant it avoided some of the errors and over-development that took place in some other parts of the Mediterranean. Consequently, most Turkish resorts still retain a degree of cultural authenticity that some of their rival resorts in other countries might envy. However, by the 1980s many people were starting to discover the delights of Turkey anew – just as all those other civilizations had done through the millennia!
What’s waiting for you?
So, what will you find at the end of your Dalaman transfer? As you might expect, Turkish resorts differ from each other in terms of their principal characteristics. Marmaris, for example, has a certain cultured and sophisticated air to it but it still feels ‘homely’.
Fethiye, in contrast, is a larger area containing a number of sub-resort areas. The town itself is cosmopolitan and very popular with international tourists, but perhaps its best known area is Oludeniz, where you’ll find a beach consistently rated as one of the best five anywhere in the world. Many travellers get their Dalaman transfer directly here.
Turkish hospitality is warm and sincere. Yes, of course, it can be a little ‘professional’ at the height of the season when just about anywhere can become a little busy, but even then you often get the impression that local people are genuinely pleased to see you and still value your custom. That’s not always something you’ll find elsewhere in the Med.
Also, this part of the country doesn’t just depend upon is beaches. It has beautiful towns and cities everywhere, offering a wide variety of cultural and historic attractions. For example, Fethiye is one of the few urban areas in the world where you have a modern tourist town with ancient ruins and artefacts scattered everywhere.
When to go
The classic months are July and August, when much of Europe is taking its holidays. Everything is vibrant at that time of year but it can be busy and average temperatures during the day might be in the mid-30s. If you can visit outside of these months, you’ll see a very different face of the country. Things will be quieter and cooler and bargains, if you’re into shopping, perhaps that bit easier to come by. It’s also usually still perfectly warm enough to go on the beach and swim in November.
Whenever you choose though, your Dalaman transfer is likely to be the start of a great holiday in this marvellous country.
