10 amazing tips for the modern web designer
Posted: Jul 02, 2014
Creating and designing a website is as easy as it is complex- web designers spend a lot of time contemplating the million details that could help increase the visibility of the client. Colour schemes, images, content, hyperlinks: in other words the choice of what to put in over what not to put in can be very distressing. Mostly, frequent Internet users would be able to tell you of their optimum Internet experience.Your favorite sites are typically easy to navigate and offer the information, products or services you desire in a quick and easy-to-find manner. Here are a few web design tips to create a more professional, user friendly website.
1. The less complex, the better.
This is the one thing to keep in mind eternally-the alpha omega of design! Clutter does not increase traffic or help the user. Say NO to flashy animations, sounds or scrolling text. All you need are balanced photos or images and simple text that are crisply laid out on every page plus a few hyperlinks and buttons to navigate to other pages on your website.
2. Be relevant
Your homepage should only be made up of the most significant info and the secondary information should be barely a click away.
3. Images can be your friends
Ensure that your images are optimized so that they don't take forever to load. Using sprites is an excellent idea.
4. No pop-up windows.
People don't like to have their web-viewing experience interrupted by pop-up windows – especially ads.
5. Color schemes.
These colors must always be in sync with your text, must never dominate it. The color of your text should, in almost all cases, be black.
6. Know your Fonts.
Choose a font that goes easy on the eyes. These fonts usually work better for websites: Arial, Georgia, Helvetica, Verdana and Times New Roman.
7. Shorten your Pages.
Limit the page length to just one page scroll. Blogs and articles are allowed to be longer, but no one likes to scroll indefinitely for a desired page.
8. Homepage links are vital
A home button is a must on every page- an absolute must. This way, visitors are spared the effort of clicking 'back' multiple times to reach the home page.
9. Contact links are as vital
A contact link is as important as a home page button. Spare the visitors' frustration over being unable to contact you. Make sure your contact link/info is easy to spot on the page.
10. Don't use icon links.
As in, every link should be a text link, including the buttons at the top of a page. You can use various button shapes, but they should have a word/text on top of them like "contact," "home," "purchase" and so forth.
