May is the UK’s National Slush Month, as reported by Inapub last month. Grab yourself an icy drink to cool off from May’s hottest cinema pick: the highly anticipated Detective Pikachu! We’ve teamed up with slushie machine supplier SnowShock to bring you these Pokémon-style slush drinks, perfect for the summer months a-coming. Some of these drinks can even be made into alcoholic versions, for those of us old enough to remember needing a link cable to trade Pokémon.

Detective Pikachu’s "Thank You, Sweetie"

Like many hard-working citizens, Detective Pikachu likes a coffee to keep his focus strong through the working day. Whether you need a boost of energy or you’ve got time to relax, this coffee-based slush is sure to clue you in to your new favourite drink!

You will need:

  • Coffee
  • Ice
  • Sugar (around 50g)
  • Milk (100 ml)
  • Yellow food colouring

Method:

  • Add the sugar to a jar, along with a few drops of yellow food colouring. Shake it up until the sugar turns yellow! You’ll have plenty left over to store for future drinks.
  • Pour some of the yellow sugar onto a plate.
  • Dampen the rim of your cup or mug. Then, turn the cup upside down and dip it in the coloured sugar.
  • Add ice, coffee, and milk to a blender or slush machine, then blitz until you get a smooth slush.
  • Pour and enjoy!

What? Pikachu is evolving! Take your coffee slush up a notch with a shot of coffee liqueur!

Charizard’s "Fire Blast"

Let’s face it, there’s 807 Pokémon, but Charizard from the original 151 is still the coolest. This fiery lizard is set to bring the heat to the new movie, so you’ll need something to cool off.

You will need:

  • Strawberry slush syrup
  • Iron bru slush syrup
  • Mango slush syrup
  • Ice
  • Sugar (around 50g)
  • Red food colouring

Method:

  • As before, add the sugar and a few drops of red food colouring to a jar. Shake it until the sugar coats red.
  • Pour some red sugar onto a plate.
  • Dampen the rim of a glass and dip it into the sugar until coated.
  • Add ice and strawberry slush syrup to a slush machine or blender and whizz until smooth.
  • Pour the strawberry slushie to fill one third of the glass. Let it sit in the freezer for a few minutes to avoid the next layer mixing.
  • While the red layer is settling, add ice and iron bru slush syrup to your machine of choice and blend to slush.
  • Pour the iron bru slush as the second layer. Pop glass back in the freezer as you make the third layer.
  • Add ice and mango slush syrup to your blender and turn to slush.
  • Pour your final, yellow mango layer to fill the glass!

Mega-evolve your Charizard drink! Add a shot of rum to turn this multi-coloured slush into a frozen cocktail.

Mewtwo’s "Psybeam"

Mewtwo was the badass villain of a generation of fans. Raise your glass to this iconic, legendary Pokémon with a good old Psybeam, based on one of the Psychic Pokémon’s signature moves.

You will need:

  • Blackcurrant slush syrup
  • Ice
  • Sugar (around 50g)
  • Black food colouring
  • Popping candy

Method:

  • You know how it goes by now. Sugar and black food colouring into a jar and shake it up!
  • Get a plate and pour some of the black sugar onto it.
  • Wet the edge of your glass and spin it around the sugar plate.
  • Using a blender or slushie machine, mix up the ice and blackcurrant slush syrup until it is a smooth slush.
  • Pour into your sugar-rimmed glass.
  • Sprinkle popping candy on the top of your slush for the crackling psychic energy of Mewtwo!

Stronger even than Mew. If you’re old enough to remember seeing Mewtwo on the big screen, try swapping the blackcurrant slush syrup for Strongbow Dark Fruits to make your drink a little bit stronger.

The Surfing Pikachu

Here’s one for the real hardcore fans. Surfing Pikachu cropped up in recent games Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, but he’s been around since a card version of the critter appeared in a 1997 issue of CoroCoro comic. Who better to get you ready for the summer blockbuster season?

You will need:

  • Carnival Exotic Fruits yellow slush syrup
  • Extreme Blue Raspberry slush syrup
  • Ice
  • Sugar (around 50g)
  • Cocktail umbrella (optional)

Method:

  • Mix up ice and Carnival Exotic Fruits yellow slush syrup in a blender or slushie machine.
  • Pour into a glass until half-full.
  • Mix up ice and Extreme Blue Raspberry slush syrup.
  • Pour into the glass, aiming for the centre. You want the blue to mix a little with the yellow slush, and it should make a centre circle of blue too!
  • Pop your little umbrella on the side for some summer-vibes.

Surf with Alolan Raichu instead! Pikachu’s evolution, Raichu, has also been surfing the waves in recent games. Add a little Chambord liqueur to turn your Surfing Pikachu into a Surfing Raichu instead.
