Top 3 Menorca ‘Secrets’ Any Visitor Should Know
Posted: Jul 18, 2014
While you can be assured of the quality of the stunning Menorca villas on offer, there are some things you may not be able to find out about this lovely island without visiting it yourself. It is certainly a haven of well known and high profile attractions, but if you look deeper you’ll find it has some lesser-known secrets too. The following are just three of the best-kept secrets of the island.
The Hidden Cave Museum
If you have access to a car, any of the Menorca villas will be within easy reach of the Santandria area. Here you'll encounter a little spot that you may not find in the travel brochures. From the Santandria beach, take a look out to sea, and to the right there is a quaint little boathouse with stone steps behind it. Ascend those steps and at the top you will see a sign announcing the Cave Museum. The cave museum is actually the residence of a friendly elderly Menorcan local man. He has painstakingly and deftly carved the cave’s entire interior by hand, with surprisingly quirky results. In his ‘living room’, for example, there’s a fireplace shaped like a giant’s head; his bedroom features mermaids from floor to ceiling; while his bathroom is decorated with shells. He does charge a nominal fee for entrance, but the experience is definitely worth it – and you have to admire his entrepreneurial skills!
Listen to the Wind
Chances are that you will have chosen one of the excellent Menorca villas within very easy access of the beach – and the island certainly has plenty of them! If you’re going to be spending a lot of time soaking up the sun and dipping your toes in the sand, you really should understand how the wind works – as this can serve as an excellent basis on which to choose your beach destination for the day! The rule of thumb is go to the area opposite the wind’s direction on the given day. For example, if the wind is blowing from the south, go to a beach somewhere on the northern coast, where you will find clear, calm conditions. If you aren’t aware of the wind direction and choose to visit a beach on the southern coast when the winds are southerly, you may find unfriendly conditions, and ultimately a less enjoyable beach experience.
A Waterpark Perfect for Children
Cala Forcat is home to a quaint little waterpark, and if you’ve brought the children on holiday with you to stay in the Menorca villas, it is well worth a visit if you have access to a car. Ideal for even very young children, the park is notable for its cleanliness and safety. The usual flumes, slides and pools can all be found here, and it’s well-secured by competent lifeguards, so you can relax and allow the kids to go crazy! If you don’t have a car, you can reach the waterpark via a bus from Ciutadella, which stops right outside.
