Maldives, the breath-taking island nation has so much more appeal other than its beaches and house reefs; for starters there are diverse cultures to immerse yourself in here, and a very rich and interesting history to learn about, especially at Malé, the country’s capital which is home to vibrant local markets, colourful buildings, trendy cafes, mosques and other ancient sightseeing landmarks. Brightsun Travel has an excellent selection of cheap tickets to Maldives from UK, taking you to this exotic nation in style. We’ve listed some of Malé’s travel highlights, which offer an authentic Maldivian experience and allow plenty of great chances for exploration and sightseeing.

Must-Visit Attractions in This Charming City

Old Friday Mosque

The main attraction of Malé is definitely its Old Friday Mosque, one of the country’s oldest and most significant mosques, built in 1658 with intricately carved coral stones. This ancient mosque complex has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also within its grounds is a minaret, stone wells and a cemetery with tombs and mausoleums of former Maldivian kings and dignitaries.

Mulee-aage Palace

Another excellent sightseeing spot of Malé is the colonial-style Mulee-aage Palace, which is located nearby to the Old Friday Mosque. This spectacular structure is the official residence of the Maldivian president which was built back in 1906, and although you aren’t allowed to enter the building, the view from outside this glistening white palace is worth witnessing, with its surroundings of pristine gardens.

National Museum

Malé’s National Museum is the ultimate cultural hub with fascinating displays of ancient artefacts and relics, including royal costumes, handicrafts, rocks, manuscripts, armour, photographs and a preserved whale skeleton, all depicting the unique Maldivian heritage. The National Museum is set in the country’s former Royal Palace building, so has a lot of historical significance and is therefore an iconic landmark of the Maldives.

Sultan Park

This tranquil park is an urban oasis in the heart of the city, set opposite the Old Friday Mosque. It was built on the remains of the Royal Palace, representing Maldivian heritage. You can admire a number of beautiful trees and flowers at Sultan Park, as well as sculptures and fountains. The lush park is also a great place to watch locals go about their daily activities and enjoy a picnic amongst scenic green surroundings.

Malé Local Market

Malé’s bustling Local Market makes for the ultimate cultural experience; this colourful marketplace delights all of the senses, especially taste; sample various food and drink items that are exclusive to the Maldives, such as exotic fruits, fresh seafood, sweetmeat, spices and homemade sweets. Malé Local Market also has stalls selling handcrafted items, so you can purchase some cute mementos and souvenirs here.
