We all love splashing colors on each other just as much as sitting around the bonfire on the previous night which is also known as ‘Holika Dahan’. Does anybody know the legend though? It is written in Bhagvata Purana that King Hiranyakashipu--the king of demonic Asuras could not be killed by either a man or an animal. He was arrogant and he wanted everyone to worship him like a God. His son Prahlada disagreed and became a devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu wanted to punish his son so he made her sister Holika trick him into sitting in the pyre with her. Holika had a blessing of not being burnt but in the pyre, she lost her life, Prahlada remained harmless. Later Vishnu appeared as Narsimha, half man and half lion and killed Hiranyakashipu.
