How to move to Australia from India?

If migrating to Australian in your mind on a permanent basis, then you must take the skilled migration pathway. The General Skilled Migration program is one of the easiest roads to move and settle down permanently in Australia.

There are three most popular visa pathways available under GSM through which you can move to Australia from India in 2020 with utmost ease and can work under your nominated occupation anywhere in Australia.

Here are the following visa programs:

  • Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189: This is a permanent, 5-year multiple entry visa and doesn't require you to have any prior State/Territory Government nomination or sponsorship from any relative residing in Australia.
  • Being a visa 189 holder, you can work or study and live anywhere in Australia on a permanent basis and your family members can also be included in your application.

    Please note, in order to apply for citizenship in Australia, you must live for 4 successive years in the country as a Visa 189 holder.

  • Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190: This one is also a permanent, 5-year multiple entry visa. For this visa, you must have a nomination by any state or territory government.
  • Being a visa 190 holder, you can work or study and live in the nominated State/Territory permanently.

    Please note, to apply for Australian citizenship, you must live in Australia as a Visa 190 holder for 4 successive years.

  • New Skilled Work Regional Visa Subclass 491: This newly introduced visa subclass, which came into effect from 16th November 2019 is for those skilled workers who wish to work and live in any designated regional area of Australia.
  • In order to apply, you have to get a sponsorship from your relative who is living in any designated regional area as a permanent resident or Citizen. A designated regional area includes entire Australia except for Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane.

    The Subclass 491 visa is also a 5-year, multiple entry visa via which you can immigrate to Australia temporarily. But, you can always apply for a permanent visa as a 491 holder through Skilled - Regional (subclass 191), which is likely to commence from November 2022.

    To qualify under Visa Subclass 189, 190 or 491, you meet the basic selection criteria:
  • Get an ITA
  • Age below 45 years
  • Nominate an occupation listed under MLTSSL or STSOL
  • Get a positive skills assessment done by ACS, an authorized assessing body
  • Get a state nomination with any state or territory of Australia or sponsorship from a relative living in regional Australia (for 190 or 491 only)
  • Score minimum of 65 Points on the points assessment grid
  • Score minimum points for proficiency in the English language
  • Meet the health and character requirements for admissibility
  • To apply under Visa 190 and 491, you must follow the basic stepwise process:
  • Complete a positive your skills assessment
  • Submit your EOI through SkillSelect
  • Apply for state nomination (for 190 or 491 only)
  • Get an Invitation To Apply
  • Submit your complete application and supporting documents
