Visapur Fort (Lonavala)

VISAPUR FORT INFORMATION :

This is a fort located near Lonavala hill station near Maharashtra State. The fort is well connected with Lohagad fort. The fort is at the height of 1084 meters above sea level. Within the fort there are caves, cisterns of water, a decorated arch and an old house. There are two roofless buildings surrounded by outer walls which were once said to be government offices. There is also a stone built house which was once used by Peshwas as a palace to live. The fort also has a carving of Hanuman as well as there are many temples built on the fort. There is also a "Well" in the middle of the fort which was once built by Pandavas.

VISAPUR FORT HISTORY :

The fort was built by the first Peshva of the Maratha empire, Balaji Vishwanath from the year 1713-1720. The fort was well connected with the Lohagad which was used by Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj to keep the treasury. On 4th March 1818 British decided to capture the Visapur fort, Suspected for housing the considerable wealth of the Maratha kingdom. The British knew about the strength of the fort therefore they came prepared with a massive battalion of 380 European and 800 native soldiers. Further this battalion was not enough for the British to capture the fort and then they sent more battalions Towards North and South.

BEST TIME TO VISIT FORT :

Best time to visit Visapur fort is between June to February. But most of the tourists visit this fort in monsoon. Visapur fort trek is known as one of the best trekking destinations in monsoon. Many tourists visit during the monsoon to enjoy the natural beauty of this fort. Visapur waterfall and the water following from the steps of the fort is one of beautiful treats to watch. The fort is fully covered with the clouds in the monsoon and the view of Pawna lake from above the fort is an eye-catching moment for the visitors. The Visapur trek is not much difficult but beginners may find it difficult to climb as there is slipper during monsoon.
