If you're looking for an ideal place to visit in the autumn and winter months, the Austrian city of Salzburg may come to mind. The city is considered to be one of the best preserved in the country and, historically, it has been an important meeting place of German and Italian cultures.

Your transfers from Salzburg Airport may take you directly through the heart of the Old Town, and you should make a plan to return on foot to explore the wonderfully preserved Baroque architecture and wander the ancient streets. However, one of the things you should certainly do while here is take advantage of the many spectacular museums of the city. You may pass several on the transfers from Salzburg Airport, so take note of their location and return to explore them in detail.

The Museum of Modern Art

With two locations in the city, you likely to catch a glimpse of one of them as you head to your accommodation on the transfers from Salzburg Airport. The Rupertinum in the Old Town is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture; it was completed in 1633 and was known as the Town Palace when it was first used as a seminary. Up until the 1970s, the building was used as a dorm for the seminary, but in 1983 it opened its doors as the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art and Graphic Collection.

When you're in the new town, look for the second building of the Museum of Modern Art, the Mönchsberg, which is perched atop Mönchsberg Mountain. Launched by an architecture competition in 1998, the winning design incorporated the watchtower and offers exhibition space, offices and auditoriums. The museum specialises in modern artworks, photographs and graphics from the 20th and 21st centuries, with a rotating collection of international art exhibits.

The Residenzgalerie

If the classical art scene is more your style, you're in for a treat. Transfers from Salzburg Airport will almost certainly take you close to the Residenzgalerie, which is one of the must-see museums for appreciators of art. The museum is located in the heart of the city, and it is unique in that when it was opened in 1923 it did not own a single work of art! All the collections it had on show were loans from various other institutions. Over the years, the museum acquired some 30 works of art, before closing in 1938. It was re-opened in 1952 and featured a shift of focus onto 16th through 19th century paintings. When the modern art museums were founded in the 1980s, the Residenzgalerie contributed all its works of modern art. Today you can stroll the galleries here and see works by Rembrandt, Makart, Ender, Rubens and many, many more masters.
