For a fabulous ski resort and a stay in a top quality catered chalet, Morzine (in the French Alps) takes some beating. The resort is renowned for its excellent facilities and family-friendly ambience. It’s a very pretty town with an historic centre and the local people are rightly proud of that. It also has the most important aspect: great skiing! It has over 650kms of piste and is twinned with the high-altitude station of Avoriaz, nearby.

Excellent Accommodation Options

Ideal as the infrastructure of the resort is, it's your accommodation that can often make or break a skiing holiday. If you're looking for a classic catered chalet, Morzine has all the answer. Throughout the village, accommodation is in plentiful supply, and there are several major hotels (including some in the 4* luxury bracket) and also some apartment complexes and several ‘holiday villages’ - so you’ll have plenty of choice. However, for many people, it’s the traditional chalet that is the epitome of a skiing holiday, and the good news is that there are many in and around the resort.

Choosing a Cosy Chalet

For the most part, the chalets in the resort are located in the outlying areas of the village, although one or two are more central. Most are built in traditional style and clad in wood. The interiors are often also decorated around a wooden theme and are usually very warm and decidedly cosy!

Whether you are part of a larger party that rents an entire dwelling or you share it with strangers, the chances are that a fair bit of your living will be communal. Most people really enjoy that aspect but if you’re not keen on the idea then it will pay to rent privately.

Wonderful Food

One superb aspect of this kind of accommodation is the food! You can choose an external dining or self-catering option in some, but in others you’ll get great homely cooking utilising the best local ingredients.

Now here’s a tip when selecting a catered chalet (Morzine or anywhere else): make sure you’re choosing one with a guaranteed menu. There’s a big difference between those that take pride in presenting great food prepared by a qualified cook and accompanied by quality wines, versus those where someone just tips some tins of garlicky tomato on top of pasta. So if you’re something of a gourmand, or just enjoy quality as opposed to utilitarian cuisine, then make sure you get some sample menus before booking.

Morzine is known as a particularly family-friendly resort, so you’ll also find plenty of accommodation where younger children are welcomed. Even so, do remember to ask, because not all properties are necessarily suitable and some might not accept children under a certain age for safety reasons.

For a good quality and great value catered chalet, Morzine is a pretty hard act to beat – so why not find out for yourself?
