The legendary city of Jhansi has gained considerable popularity among history buffs. Traditionally known as the gateway to the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, Jhansi used to be the seat of the famous Chandela dynasty.

Hence, after you visit this city, you would get several opportunities to witness the artistic grandeur of the Chandela rulers through many forts and palaces scattered across the region. These magnificent, historically significant structures provide a glimpse of the culture and traditions of the bygone era. The main draw of a Jhansi tour package is the Jhansi Fort, where the battle between Rani Lakshmi Bai and the British forces took place.

Here are some of the top attractions you must explore during your visit to Jhansi:

  • Jhansi Fort: Also known as Jhansi ka Kila, this grand fortress is on a hilltop called Bangira. This fortress served as a stronghold of the Chandela Kings in Balwant Nagar from the 11th through the 17th century. The Jhansi Fort has a distinctive North Indian style of fort construction which makes its appearance quite different from the forts in the South. Ten gates give the access, and each of them has its name. The Bhanderi gate, used by Rani Lakshmi Bai to escape during the battle of 1857, is quite popular amongst the tourists. There are many things to explore within this fort, including the Kadak Bijli cannon used in the uprising of 1857. People can find one Shiva temple and Ganesh temple here as well. Near to the fort lies the Rani Mahal, built in the latter part of the 19th century.
  • Rani Mahal used to be one residence of Rani Lakshmibai. This beautiful palace features six halls and parallel corridors with multi-foiled arches, along with a plethora of quaint rooms. The Darbar Hall is specially decorated beautifully with paintings in vibrant hues that exhibit diverse floral, faunal, and geometrical motifs. Its arches are gorgeously embellished with peacock and rosette patterns. On the ground floor of the Rani Mahal, you can find stone sculptures collected from Madanpur, Barua Sagar, Dudhai, and Chandpur, which date from the Gupta dynasty to the medieval period.
  • Jhansi Museum: Constructed sometime around the late 19th century, this is among the most iconic museums of India. It houses artifacts dating back to the 4th century BC along with exquisite artworks of pre-modern India. This museum is dedicated to Rani Lakshmi Bai and illustrates the stories of her bravery. There are multiple galleries present at the Jhansi Museum, where you can find several intriguing objects, including centuries-old manuscripts. The top attractions of this museum include the weapons of Lakshmi Bai and those used in Sepoy Mutiny, art galleries of the Guptas and Chandelas, terracotta, bronze structures, along silver and bronze coins.

You can book a Jhansi tour package any time. However, the ideal time to visit this place would be during the winters, particularly between November and March.
